I'm currently downloading Jumpgate and have a question. Why are nvidia cards recommended over Ati?

I'm wondering if it has to to do with speed (of sorts) as I've recently reinstalled Freespace 2 and it runs soooo....... slow, 1-5 fps i'd guess. Even the B5 open version is slow, yet I can run games like crysis with no problem.

Now I have a reasonable machine (dual core 2.2, 2Gb ram etc) which should run anything pretty fast that was made circa 2000.

So, will I get similar problems to these online?
