AI server Question for Scortch regarding lag

Lag, the bane of online games, including Jumpgate Classic.

However, a players own Conflux spawn (the only AI in the game atm) and tagged flux have never had this problem, entirely because they exist on the local machine of the pilot they are targeting, with their position then being relayed to observing machines so the only lag involved with flux is when you are seeing flux targeting other people.

This has made the Conflux fighting element of Jumpgate Classic in particular, smooth.

If the AI in Jumpgate Evolution is going to be handled differently, running from their own dedicated AI server, will lag then be a bane for Conflux fighting and 'universal life' interactions like it is for pvp?

Re: AI server Question for Scortch regarding lag

actually thats not entirely true. I remember a couple times i was lagged and couldnt kill the flux in sector because by the time I could see them they had already despawned or something

Still a good question though. lag is the bane of all online gaming

On the whole true, but when we hit the oh look im stuck in the gate again, and case in point last’s nights squad run around I was getting f2/3 message’s about what we were doing in the swarm after the swarm had been killed, and im sure you might of got the message that I was logging because the lag was joke when I was then downstairs having a cuppa some 10 minutes later.

So any thing to improve the lag for everyone, how the PVP players stand it Im not sure. But im sure AhhClem had kangaroo juice in his HF last night as he was here no over there no he’s here no he is behind, in front of me.

AI is completely server side in Jumpgate Evolution. Lag should not be a problem however unless your connection is really slow.

Re: AI server Question for Scortch regarding lag

how does the netcode work in Jumpgate Evolution? Is it still pseudo-lagfree such that when you think you've hit a ship, you have? Or will you have to take into account lag? I can imagine that being extremely tough...

Most modern online games have some form of prediction or 'push latency' added.

I'm sure Jumpgate wont be much different.

Re: AI server Question for Scortch regarding lag

There are a number of systems in the network code to help deal with lag and help reduce bandwidth as well. I was playing from an airport over a cell modem with no problems recently, so I can't imagine it being an issue. But if it is, you can be assured that fixing it would be a top priority.

Netcode was definitely one of the things that needed help in Jumpgate Classic.

Getting killed by someone whose invincible ship had flown out of radar range minutes before was always a bit lame.
