Re: Asshattery in Jumpgate Evolution
Safe zones will change how people grief others, it won't by any means do away with it. In some respects it would probably make things worse.
In your opinion, what would be worse to have happen to a new player: Get civved by some jackass and have to re-equip, or have that same jackass follow him around killing all his flux? I don't know about you, but with "safe" zones, if I was cruising around in an Apty and had some loser in a Chirp pluck away all my spawns, I'd be inclined to just splash on a petal, re-equip, and head in the opposite direction, because that would really be my only option. But you can't say that to a noob who's complaining about it. "This guys killing all my spawns!" "Just crash your ship into something solid at high speed, he'll go away." Unless of course, you want to take the concept of safe zones into the realm of the ridiculous by making it so that no one can fire on another players flux spawns. |

Re: Asshattery in Jumpgate Evolution
When has that happened? I can think of lots of civ rips (justified and unjustified). But one player following another incessantly and shooting another player's flux spawns? I'm not sure I recall hearing any questions about that over :help, or even the rumor mill.
Besides, i'd bet most newbies would appreciate the flux cover. It's the fake-newbs that would want all those fluxies |

I'm with Injustice, the "griefers" will find a way, regardless of the dev's intentions.

Re: Asshattery in Jumpgate Evolution
i can guarantee that any safe zone will be completely ineffective at stopping asshattery. In fact, it might lead to more asshattery since people wont be able to kill the asshats in the safe zones.
People stealing flux actually happened a bit in Jumpgate, but people generally didn't do it because you'd find yourself killed for such douchebaggery. But it will be impossible to kill these people in the safe zones, so I'm positive Jumpgate Evolution will have lots of flux stealing going on, and other douchebaggery. If you think otherwise, you're simply wrong. As an example, take a look at these asshats in Team Fortress. This is an example of what happens when you have rules that protect the victims, but in reality it ends up protecting the asshats. If it wasn't for friendly fire being disabled, or getting banned for killing your own teammates, these guys would find it difficult to pull this off. How to be a total douchebag in Team Fortress 2 :: DESTRUCTOID - Hardcore Gamer Community :: Video Games PC PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 Wii PS3 GameCube PSP DS GBA PS2 PlayStation 3 Obviously Jumpgate is a different game, but the principles are the same. It's impossible to completely stop the asshattery, but by giving the players the tools to police each other, we can make it very difficult to pull off. It's a MUCH more effective solution then gameplay limiting safe zones. Jumpgate of old might of had Rollio running around causing havoc, but Rollio couldn't haul under that account, or mine, or do anything other then run and kill the weak. He was locked into that by the community, and he was always on the run and always a target. That is player policing. And I cant help but wonder how much more we could of done had we been giving effective tools for finding escorts, rewarding police-type activities, and a better way of tracking baddies within that factions space. |
