Re: Dearest Awen
Well, what I would have done is convert the old vBulletin forums to the new site using Impex. Then set up a seperate Jumpgate and Jumpgate Evolution forums since it's community.netdevil.com anyway. Then I would have forwarded forums.jossh.com threads to the new threads at the new site. Then set up the Jumpgate Evolution forums. That way everyone would have still had their old account names, passwords, and posts in the new site. And they could service both at the same site.
But that's just me I guess. |

Re: Dearest Awen
those ND forums sure do suck.
RDP-crippling huge & bloated flash header, badly configured vBulletin, timeouts, latency, lost posts, CSS issues out the wazoo. They even crash firefox for me on a regular basis. as I write this, they are currently down and have been for the last half hour at least. At least the JOSSH forums only had server/dbase timeouts. The Jumpgate Evolution one is broken in almost every way a forum can be broken. I don't mind Awen's censorship, as a company board should be censored to a degree and she really hasn't been all that bad. But the fact that the board is so unstable and buggy is a disgrace to the series of tubes I call The Internets. |

Re: Dearest Awen
Sooner or later they will change the cookie domain to .netdevil.com ,instead of community.netdevil.com as they have it now, and many things will fix themselves. I may seem like a dufas but people do pay me up to $50 an hour to work on, mod, fix, install their vBulletin forums. This domain setting cookie issue is the easiest money I ever make. It's not the only problem but I bet it's the cause of many of them as it usually is.

Re: Dearest Awen
So Jump, why does your site work so fast, with so few problems in comparison to the JumpGate Evolution/NetDevil site? If it's something as simple as what you just said (cookie domain??? sounds like it belongs on the FoodNetworkTV.com), for God's sake I hope who ever the hell is in charge over there will pay attention. I love your site but it really pisses me off that the official site is such a f'ricking pain to use as I feel I am being unfairly limited by their actions or inactions as the case may be.

Re: Dearest Awen
The thing is, they are getting account info from accounts.netdevil.com for forums on community.netdevil.com. Which is fine if they set vBulletins cookie to work an all domains at .netdvil.com. Unfortunately they have it set to the community.netdevil.com domain so when your account info is checked it's getting fubared. There are other issues that are causing problems but this is a major issue for many new sites. Fine tuning can take time. I'm sure they have someone competent enough to deal with it. They probably have a list of issues they are addressing in whatever order they set.
Running a high traffic forum takes a lot of resources and effort. It's not an overnight thing. Especially if you didn't expect such high traffic. |
