This reviewer sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about. I wouldn't get too worried about a game that's still heavily in development.

Like Scorch said, anything can be changed if it doesn't work.

As for story in the game, I don't understand what's so bad about that, it doesn't mean that the players can't create their own stories in addition to what is already provided.

Re: Doooooooooooooom

Artificial NPC quests to save the princess serving as story are static, and don't really belong in a living breathing universe (which is what Jumpgate Classic was, and I hope what Jumpgate Evolution will be).

To me a huge part of what makes Jumpgate special is that things like sentients attacks and the ISU flashfire blockade ARE the story.

The press was even lucky enough to view a prototype of the “player run” stations that gamers will eventually buy in Jumpgate Evolution. “Players can set their own price on these stations. They can also insert ‘modules’ on them that have refineries, refueling stations, and other elements that they can allow other players to access.”
There go all the fanciful dreams about no POS, eh?
The problem with player-owned stations was not that they existed, but that they were implemented without full awareness of the ramifications. I'm sure that by now, Scorch and Istvan are well aware of how not to implement POS's, and are working on appropriate changes. I don't think we have enough information yet to get really worried.

Then again, I said the same thing about Auto Assault...

“We’re working on ideas on how to get more storyline into the game,” commented Petersheck. “That was something the original version of the game was missing.”
Reads more like: We're working on turning Jumpgate into a WoW clone. The players used to be the story. Say goodbye to that.
I don't play WoW, so I don't know how the storyline works there, but I know story can't be entirely player-run or you get the old "stop interfering with my RP!!!" arguments whenever the story actually starts to go somewhere. As long as the devs refrain from interfering directly and let the players resolve things through their own efforts, I don't have a problem with the occasional nudge to the storyline.

Eventually, Petersheck accepted his first mission and set off into space, which was a standard kill-and-loot scenario.
Heh.
Personally, I think they should get rid of the whole mission thing altogether. Who wants to run fedex quests or commit themselves to doing a single task for the next half hour when they'd much rather just fly around and do stuff? Don't give me a combat mission, just pay me for clearing sectors of flux and shooting down criminals. Don't give me mining quotas, let me harvest whatever I find and have the station buy it if they need it. Don't ask me to scan that accursed anomaly for the millionth time, let me trade in all my crappy DSS disks to the local research organization.

Don't give me missions at all. Just pay me whenever I do something that benefits my faction. It's more fun that way.

“There really wasn’t much AI [in the original Jumpgate], it was very PvP-centric,” he said. “We really wanted to add much more AI to the game.”
Seems like he says PvP-centric like it's a bad word.
To a lot of MMO players, it is. Most games that are considered PvP-centric tend to be full of newbie-griefers and the like, so when you mention PvP, the average player immediately thinks of the horde of level 200 Apocalypse Knights that always stood between them and the rat-killing fields.

There's also the fact that Jumpgate was always a little light on non-PvP activities. Sure, we've got asteroids and half an economy, but once they fixed the mattfarm exploit, there wasn't much left for the carebears to do. If they want to get back all the people that left for EVE and similar games, and have people around for all the mining and hauling that needs to be done, they'll need to really emphasize non-PvP features.

Besides, they've been focusing mostly on changes to the game, and we've already got PvP. It's the only thing that actually sort of works around here.

Asteroids that players are allowed to mine will be denoted with bright colors of some kind – in our demonstration we saw asteroids with crystalline green, blue, and metallic gold markings. When you see an asteroid that can be mined, you’ll know. “It’s sort of like an Easter egg hunt,” Petersheck stated. “You’ll go out to an asteroid belt and attempt to find rocks that you can mine from. There will be lots of common asteroids, but you’ll know when you find a rich one.”
This sounds exactly like WoW does mining to me, except that they'll be spawning in fields of common roids instead of along the sides of WoW mountains.
This sounds exactly like the current mining scheme does to me, except that the roids are candy-colored now.

For the existing Jumpgate fanbase, there’s no need to worry about the future of your game. Petersheck mentioned that PvP remains in Jumpgate and will remain a part of the game.
No need to worry eh? This gives that impression that the guy thinks we're like people playing counterstrike or something.
I don't know what you mean by the CS comment (never played that game), but this goes along with what I said earlier. They emphasized the non-PvP stuff because PvP is the only thing that's not completely broken, and therefore doesn't need to be changed much. Sure, we need to deal with the FF issue and I'd like to not feel like an idiot for refusing to fly a giant banana, but these are minor things compared to the rest of what they're doing.

We want player to continue to have fun as they progress through the game and never lose interest in what they need to accomplish.
Progress through the game? Dude, you don't progress through Jumpgate. You LIVE there in your spare time. It's not a something you go THROUGH, it's a place you go TO.
Agreed. Please don't turn my sandbox into a themepark.

Did I mention that getting rid of missions would be fun?

Overall, I don't really care what they add...just as long as I get to pilot my ship first person. After that, everything else is just added bonuses.

The best thing that happened in Jumpgate is players starting the role playing event without bugging the GM to get the ball rolling. I've actually been there.
Yeah, remember when those guys Chemdog and Russian went and led an attack on Amananth. Flashfire production got turned off for a month and nightly population got cut in half because all anyone did was cry about the lack of FF's. So much for player run/controlled story line.

Face it, player run storylines don't work because some players are seen to be *******s for forcing their RP on others. Unless you are interacting with GM storyline (perhaps with some degree of influence on the outcome) people won't be happy. Hell, people won't be happy anyway. But at least then I can fly around after an event without a bullseye on my ass.

I know the best events I've been in were the ones that were started by players, where the GMs fleshed it out and added complexity.

LOL, who was the GM at the time, Moll? If you expect me to believe that Chemdog and Russian can stop production at an invulnerable station you'd better share whatever pills you're taking.

Re: Doooooooooooooom

To me, the reaction to POSes is a bit over-the-top. Consider how the POS impact would have been different if a) maintenance had been left ON; and b) there was no farming cash.

I'm not in love with the POS concept, but JGCs POS problem was driven to a large degree (IMO) b
