Download AND buy optiion?
I live out in the middle of nowhere and do not have the availability of real highspeed broadband. To that end, I cannot keep a connection open long enough to download the full version (with music) of Jumpgate Classic.
Now, with Jumpgate Evolution going to much higher end graphics, it is obviously going to be an absolutely HUGE file to download, so my question is will the game also be offered as a snail mail CD that we can buy? Or at the very least a file that can be downloaded in one fell swoop like Jumpgate Classic is that can be transferred over to a USB pen? That way I could go over to a friend's place in town, D/L it on their system (cable internet), save it to a 2GB USB pen, then bring it home to my system and install it from there. If it is going to be set up as a downloaded installer that then downloads the game, I'm going to be screwed. To give you an idea, it took me 12 attempts to update Jumpgate Classic when I installed it this time. Luckily I had the original installer saved on a CD so I didn't have to D/L it, but of course it was three years (or longer) out of date on patches. |

Re: Download AND buy optiion?
How are you going to play the game if you can't stay connected?

Re: Download AND buy optiion?
I can answer that one Jump! With many discos, just like my pre-broadband wireless experience. You do the best you can with what you've got and hope things get better eventually. I'm still waiting for AT&T to get close enough for me to get a DSL. In the sticks, it's dial up, flaky wireless or satellite link. You city folks have it too good when it comes to Internet (and very little else IMO).

Re: Download AND buy optiion?
Hey, Jump. Long time, no chat to, man.
Nah, I can stay connected for hours at a time, but at an average of around 60MB per hour download speed, you can see where a large game (1-2GB or more) would cause problems. And with some serious graphics upgrades coming in Jumpgate Evolution, I would think it's going to be one hell of a lot bigger than the 148MB that Jumpgate Classic currently is. I mean, Crysis is supposed to be 6GB. I haven't been able to find any definitive info on WoW (how much room it takes) or HALO 2, etc. All I know is that any game that is graphics intensive is going to be huge (at least when you compare it to my connection) and is going to incur multiple HOURS of d/l for me. And my connection sometimes just stops working (have to give it a kick with something along the lines of Weatherbug) and then it starts back up again. This is fine when I'm playing, I can do that. But if I've got a 24 hours download going..... ![]() |

Re: Download AND buy optiion?
WoW is currently 8.5 gigs on my hard drive. I think SWG was somewhere between 5 and 6 when I quit playing.
A download manager would be yer best bet there Syl. you also might try looking for some sort of compression program, like the one NetZero offers with its sign up package. |

Re: Download AND buy optiion?
We are still looking into how the game will be distributed. The goal is to keep the game download as small as possible however, so hopefully it will not be too bad either way.

Thank you for looking and even more so for answering.
I will tell you this, if it comes down to it I'll take my computer over to a friend's place that has cable and download it there. Ain't no crappy connection gonna slow this ol boy down. But there are people out there that it will...... |

Download Accelerator Plus Download Accelerator Plus - Free Download Manager
Its free and not very naggy. In most situations it will recover where it left off if you disconnect. If a file is hosted on multiple servers, it will DL fragments of the file from each of the servers thus speeding up the DL. |

Re: Download AND buy optiion?
I'd love a box too but unfortunatley Australia seems to miss out on a lot of this kind of thing. Not enough of a market i suppose tho i think that that may be a miscalculation personally.
DL is fine but a retail version would be my preference if possible. |
