Re: Earth and Beyond
Now that I've actually been thinking about EnB a bit lately, I must say, their PR system totally kicked Jumpgate's PR system's butt. Everything you did for one faction had spreading effects to all the other faction. It was certainly possible to keep most factions tolerating you at least, but, you defenitely had to decide who you wanted to be liked by.

Re: Earth and Beyond
I did the beta and played EnB..it wasnt bad for the time, it should just be mentioned it had walking in stations, manufacturing in stations at terminals not in your ship, and avatars walking around to talk to. It wasnt a sim..so not all the axes, but we dont have a game like that even now..

Re: Earth and Beyond
I didn't play EnB....Were there more then 5 (3 playable + 2 non) like there are in this game? I think it's a great idea, but it would be tough to do with only 5 factions. I don't think I've ever even seen those sliders telling the relations between the factions move on jossh. :-)

Re: Earth and Beyond
I payed 20bucks to play that beta, for cuppla months.
i did not like the monster part, just combinations to defeat them. The quests were broke, buged. Even if you smote the monster you still had that quest. and now the monster is dead so so are you. I ran three avatars with the same results. No wonder no one subed for it when it went live. |

Re: Earth and Beyond
Basically, if we used a pr system similar to EnB's, if you were to take military missions for octavious against quantar, oct pr goes up, factions allied with octavious go up a bit, quant goes down and quant allies go down a bit. Doing civ missions for oct would put your oct pr up, and possibly have a tiny impact on factions which are at war with you or are allied with you. I'd think that the corporations would/could have pr as well. A heck, I'll try to put together a plan and post a new thread tomorrow..

Re: Earth and Beyond
If you used Jumpgate Classic flight model, and everything else from EnB.
They players would come in droves. EnB was not a hardcore simmers game. It how ever was the most fun Ive ever had in a MMO. Nuttin more nail biting that sitting in a lvl 30 ship, with a solar sail, and a debris mask. toddling around lvl 50 mobs, and taking 45 minutes to 2 hours to mine ores that sold for huge amounts of money. Ive been looking for this challage from game to game, and yet to find it. All 3 races where very diverse, and had things the others did not. The trade and building system, was great for haggling you way to getting the best equipt and outfiting your ship to forfill its mission. |

Re: Earth and Beyond
There were a lot of things I liked about Earth and Beyond, but there were some things I disliked as well. I loved the character creation/customization of your ship...it was amazing. I didn't like that you were stuck with that one ship for that character (Jumpgate was awesome for this). I liked the tradeskills and the 3 different experience types (exploration was a great idea, and they implemented it better than any game I've seen since). The experience did seem to hit a wall at a certain level though, which I disliked.
The thing I disliked the most about the game though was that you did not have full control of your ship (the same thing I dislike about Eve). I love Jumpgate for this. Having said all of that, I was genuinely sad when Earth and Beyond was shut down. |

Re: Earth and Beyond
I beta tested EnB for over 6 months and really couldn't find anything I liked other than it was pretty. The chat system was horrendous, the mission system was a joke as well. I won't even get into that panzy flightless mode. I could almost see the wires I was hooked to. The AI was pitiful and the whole walking around station bit was a tad too silly for me. Add this with the attitude you could sense in the devs and I knew the game wouldn't be around long.
I'm glad some people enjoyed it for it's short life though. |

Re: Earth and Beyond
Keep in mind, that it was my first MMO experience, and I hadn't ever heard of Jumpgate at that time. So, for me, everything was totally fresh and new (from an MMO standpoint), and although I wished I could fly my ship a la X-Wing and/or Privateer, it was the first game I had found with the sense of interaction with hundreds/thousands of other players at once, with a relatively open ended setting that I loved in Privateer. Obviously, it wasn't as open ended as Jumpgate RP-wise, but, you could do whatever you wanted at any given point in time. As I said above, one thing that it did better than Jumpgate, and better than any MMO that I've actually played, was the PR system, with factions, sub-factions, companies and others all interplaying based on what you did, what type of NPCs you killed, missions you took, etc.
Also, I did enjoy walking around the stations, , seeing what my squadmates 'looked' like, etc., but that is far, far from any sort of critical point to me. |

Re: Earth and Beyond
I betaed EnB from the start..and have to say, very diplomatically...your all right. Let me explin, when I was starting EnB they openly said,"this is an experiment in MMO" and they meant it. They were the first to even consider things like that. They had avatar creation, with realtime manufacturing, loot used for weapons manufacturing, and missions strictly for exploration. They did missions that were serious, and had a sense of humor..like the one to kill all the birds in the galaxy..lol. Anyway, it was not a Sim..it was an MMO..and it was made to see who was going to be interested in something like it...full time. It had a 2 year lifspan from the day it started, and they stayed with it even though 5k people got up a petition to keep it going. No it couldnt match Jumpgate in newtoniun ..but then, it wasnt suposed to...so the whole thing is. I liked the game design, I hated the odd ship designs though, the terrian ships were the only ones I though looked realistic. The idea of huge corporations rulling in the background was brought up some, I swear...we live with today in RL. So..yes your all right, EnB was a great game...for what it was made to be, an experiment for 2 years, and here we are years later and some of us do miss it, because it was way ahead of its time, and was used as a model for others to follow. Cudos to all EnB fans, and ok, we admit it wasnt a sim...lol.
