GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

So is there any news?

All I found out from one article is that Jumpgate Evolution will also have characters, not just ships.. if its true and what form I do not know. but its fun to speculate.. pls post other news/rumors here from GDC, if u find some.

"Jumpgate Evolution will allow people to not just select different ships but also different characters as the dev team learned from players that they relate more if the game has characters rather than just being able to pilot space ship."

Re: GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

All these interviewers just make shit up. I have been interviewed for at least 20 different magazines/newspaper articles and I swear I learn new things about myself every time I read one of them...How do they know stuff about me that I didn't tell or that never actually happened or that are flat untrue you ask...well they lie to get there story printed.

I just found this quote from Hermann

Quote:
Ten Ton Hammer: Finally, will players ever be able to get out of their spaceships? If avatar movement isn't a part of the game, how will players be represented in the game aside from their ships?

Hermann: This is a big issue that comes up quite a bit. The argument is usually something along the lines of “people don’t identify with a space ship” and therefore the game will feel shallow or something. I think this is a false comparison, the reason being that as a developer you are in control of what people are identifying with. For example, in Freespace 2, you are also a “ship” and yet that game is highly immersive. The reason is that the game immerses YOU the player, not your ship. You aren’t playing an avatar that flies the ship, you are the avatar flying the ship.

In that sense Jumpgate is more like an FPS. I also think that it is dangerous to try and be all things to all people in a game. There have been games that tried to do both and unless you do both as well as the top games out there, the players are left feeling like it’s a half implemented feature. Players are smart and can tell when developers forced features into the game to hit some box on a checklist as opposed to focusing on what makes the game better. While we may add avatars at some point, right now we are focused on making the best flight game we can – and if we accomplish that I feel that we will have a very immersive experience.
So in this version we don't have characters in the other version we do...all this speculation and sky is falling because so and so interviewer said "X" is getting ridiculous.

Re: GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

From what I saw @ San Francisco there weren't avatars. I didn't even see a ship dock. SO my best guess is release won't have avatars or the ability to dock

Re: GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

Just don't read all those interviews and you don't have to worry about all the crap and stuffing. The only thing worthwhile is how Jumpgaters view it when they see it and direct quotes from the devs. Everything else is fluff directed at an audience and marketed ad targeting.

Re: GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

yeah but not everyone sees it the way most of us do and start freaking out because a friend of their friend read something somewhere saying that jumgate will have elves in space. some people out there believe every crap posted online, sad.

one thing i did notice about the ign and this article was the way they said something about your wife dying in space blah blah blah then you go on a killing spree. i think it was just a mission concept they were shown and they probably thought thats how the game begins.

offtopic: i did activate my Jumpgate Classic acc, using my bros computer coz mine kept crashing. so /wave

Re: GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

There is no mission system yet so I doubt that. I also doubt they saw anything we didn't see.

People get upset because they are vested in this game and this community. You have joined us recently so it's probably hard to understand. Hopefully, there will be many years of Jumpgate Evolution and you will understand the passion. Your talking about a community that did grass roots fund raising to purchase advertising for Jumpgate. Of course they get passionate about the game. NetDevil understands this and I think all the new folks should learn to understand.

I agree with that, but I think you who have seen the game, and others who understand it more then these "BigTime" reviewers should explain and discuss anything new that is being mentioned and that can be interpreted as something totally different by people who dont know the game.

Re: GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

The problem with big time reviewers, is right now they get see the game and ask questions. They are not playing it so the questions they ask and how the answers are interpreted are filtered by the games currently on the market. So the boils down to WoW, Call of Duty, and Halo3. Writers will write the articles in terms understood by their readers. Until a playable beta is out all reviews are basically shit, because people are talking out their ass.

Re: GDC Jumpgate Evolution news?

While i don't agree that that's necessarily true, most of the reviews i have seen (bothered to read) outside of the true Jumpgate community have been rather crappy. It is true that most reviewers go to what they know in order to describe things, i think what they really ought to do is go back a few years to when "flying" combat games were more prevalent. There were a tonne of them and most of their readers probably still have a copy somewhere to play when the moods strikes them.

I think what the reviewers really need to avoid is comparisons with the larger MMOs that are currently out there. There are things that are similar to be sure, however it serves no real purpose to compare Jumpgate Evolution with WoW or even Eve. They're such different games with such different styles that any similarities are simply misinterpreted.

You cant blame all the comparisons on the reviewers either.. I mean, its ok to do it once in a while when suited. But if you say things often enough, people will misinterpret and believe that it is true, works like propaganda.
