Re: How to shard without ruining the game.

Shards from what I understand are Just copies of the game universe. In other words all the computers and software it takes to play the game is a shard.

When I used the word server I mean shard. How ND loads the shards is of course a concern to us because ND could do it automatically or not it's up to them. The only reason to do it automatically if for launch day to keep the system from crashing. After the initial rush dies down they could then let people choose from shards that aren't caped. How ever you get assigned to a shard once you are there I seriously doubt you would get moved it would be impossible to have a game with player squads or any kind of "player community" if they bounced people from shard to shard.

Of course they could also reserve a shard for Jumpgate old schoolers

EVE has 200,000 account and at there peak had 37,000 players on at one time. If it is 2500 accounts to a shard there only counting on 500 peeps max to be playing at any given time.

500 reminds me of beta's 400 of Jumpgate Classic.. and I'd think that 500 folks online, even though that it sounds nice, is a bit short for Jumpgate Evolution's.. but I know nothing and we're speculating. I just wish I'm sharded in a place where Im forced to play with centra/south america when all my Jumpgate friends are in the northern part of america and some of EU.

Pulling numbers out of my rear, I'd say we'd have to have 10k subscribers or more to have an average online of 2500. Maybe all of our number guesstimations are too low, and there will be 50k per server w/ 10k online at a time .

The second part of that statement was directed at those whining about a possible inability to get on their first server of choice. In regards to your quote, I can't remember any major MMO that ever limited the number of characters that could be made on one server at release.

Even so, my point is even if you couldn't play on your first choice server would it be that horrible that Jumpgate Evolution was so successful there were lines to play?

Not in beta, but when it goes live i want to be with my friends. And the statment that biteme made, lets me to think its a mute point. I fully expect to play in the same universe every time i log in.

Re: How to shard without ruining the game.

Whatever happens, there needs to be a way to ensure you log in to the same server every time. Otherwise, it'd be annoying to haul tons of stuff to a station just to log in the next day and not having any equipment at the station because it's a different server. =)

Ive got an idea.

Lets make a real big fuss about safe zones so they dont get included, then demand a no tag system and ask for a really crappy econ style/system. Thatll make sure there wont be more than 2500 people playing and that should solve the problem about not getting on the same server every log on.

Disclaimer: Yes Im joking and no I didnt mean to offend anyone.

@Elmdor not everyone is a loner. Last 1.5 years I only log on to play with my squad/m8s. But saying that, Jumpgate Evolution might actually have reasons to log on by yourself (like a player friendly econ system).
