We have a plan to start bringing out new assets that coincide with the backstory. The wait is not long.

Sectors in Jumpgate Evolution are at this time still the same size as the were in Jumpgate Classic. At top rates of speed available in Jumpgate Classic, a player in beta test took ~48 hours to reach the edge of a sector (the point at which the distance calc to his gate of origin broke down).

During original beta in 2001, I did some arithmetic and determined that the extent of 3D navigable space in a Jumpgate Classic sector is sufficient to place, at game scale, either most of the real inner solar system, or a large gas giant planet (such as Jupiter or Saturn) and all its orbiting moons (way more than enough for that, really).

Before you get overly excited about this capability, there are two serious caveats to this information: (1) flight speeds in Jumpgate are too low to make crossing regions of space this large playable or fun without a massive travel assistance mechanic of some other sort (besides the gates we use to change sectors). (2) there are limits to the number of assets (mesh/texture memory as well as rendering limits) that can be placed in a sector. As a result, in Jumpgate Classic all "content" generally existed within 100km or so of the gates.

We're talking about some of the more obvious and not-so-obvious approaches to using more of the space we have available in sectors, but what can and will be implemented for release in Jumpgate Evolution is uncertain at this time.

Re: Into the Precipice I go!

ooo thank you for answering. thats pretty big too, cant believe someone actually took 48 hours to travel. I guess what i really wanted to know is how far objects ( stations, asteroid fields, etc...) and how many of those we can fit in one sector. But that gives me an idea though of what can be done.

Heya Isty (LTNC man),

I was wondering about perhaps a secret (read: easter-egg) Jumpgate into Jumpgate Classic WAY out there in those sectors?

How about a HYPERSPACE mechanic within sector.... meaning you hit a special Hyperspace gate to warp to another part of a sector... and note that using this gate also implies that when you arrive to said gate your ship is moving .... No stopping... Thus requiring some pilotship to use said Hypergates or Stargates..

Seriously speaking never knew that putting stuff out 300k from 0.0.0 ate up serious memory.... One word... whoa!

I concur 48 hours?? So deep spacing actually has a limit... You could chase someone for two days in the same sector..... wow... LOL

i like this idea.

maybe the possibility of player made gates that would take you from deep space POSs to within an X distance of Jumpgates or something like that i dont know i cant think right now !!!

but i like the idea though.

Is there a reason for this?
Because this is what ND do bitme.
However else would they have trademarked "soon"?

I have a question.
Are there any plans to implement something similar to the sents in Jumpgate Classic?
If there are please please please do not change the music when they target a pilot. To this day it is the only thing in online gaming to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

Cheers
