The real question is, once the distance calculation breaks down, do you have to fly back however much longer you flew past that point until it starts ticking again or will it start ticking down the moment you head back?

interesting question.. well, something went wrong this night, I should have been 80million distance in deep space, but I was 75 and it was heading back, I guess my mouse moved cause I didnt alt tab.. But I turned into deep space again..

Im also guessing that the limit is around 80million distance.

edit: and who said Jumpgate doesnt have autopilot!!?? lol... well Its more like cruise control, but still
