Jumgate Evolution replacing or concurent with Jumpgate Classic?

This may have been answered somewhere else already or during the JPR interview that i missed.... but what will happen to Jumpgate Classic? Will it continue on after Jumpgate Evolution? What about once Jumpgate Evolution goes open beta?

Just curious on how the 2 will interact in the future.

There is still no answer on this yet, I think we have a pretty good idea but we need to spend more time at NetDevil on this topic before we make anything final.

I'm sure it will be a tough decision either way.

Really, it's time to put Jumpgate Classic to bed. It's had its run, and if Jumpgate Evolution delivers on the promises then it'll be superior to Classic in every way, shape and form. Jumpgate Classic is running on a core renderer that is nearly a decade old now.

We've enjoyed it over the years but it's time to move on. But I for one will be there when they hit the switch on the server that one last time.

Re: Jumgate Evolution replacing or concurent with Jumpgate Classic?

uh... NO SpaceDrake! Leave Jumpgate Classic alone (but with minor patches, updates, maintenance, or whatever) until Jumpgate Evolution is PAST the beta stage and dragging in tons of players. I see no reason I couldn't be Wild_Bill on Jumpgate Classic and Wild_Bill on Jumpgate Evolution at the same time (well not at the SAME time, but with two active accounts). I don't want to go "cold turkey" while I'm waiting for the new game to get past it's teething/growing pains. I don't even mind paying for two accounts (yeah, a lot of people have multiple accounts in Jumpgate Classic but I don't). I do not want to give up what I've got and then have to wait until the "new improved version" gets past the toddler stage.

I distinctly remember the problems with EP2. And when we lost JOSSH, the squad site problems, the "new economy", the forced joining of the US and EU into the WWS, etc. While Jumpgate Evolution is getting through those things that ALWAYS crop up on a new game, I want to still have Jumpgate Classic to live in. Once it's past that and most of the players have moved up to Jumpgate Evolution, then kill the old Jumpgate Classic. All this of course is built on the premise that Jumpgate Classic and Jumpgate Evolution are going to be separate entities. I don't know how else it could be, but admit my ignorance limits my imagination on this point.

With all the hoopla and hostility about how a wipe is necessary to level the playing field for the coming horde of new players, I think the only way to do it without losing a significant portion of the base that have played almost continuously for nearly 6 years, you have to have a new and separate game. Let those who wish to keep their handles keep them. Perhaps even have a "legends" page with the stats of Jumpgate Classic players (and hear I mean ALL Jumpgate Classic players with more than 100 hours in-game, not just the ones currently active) for folks to look at and compare themselves to in the new Jumpgate Evolution. And yeah, when I say wipe, I mean take away my 400mc, my POS, my ships, my artis and everything else except my name and honor. As long as it's a new and seperate game, the wipe would be right and proper. I will still have my current skills and I would be willing to start all over but only in a new game.

Of course, if you want to let me just retranslate what I am and have now, like when the EU moved in with us, I'm cool with that too. The worst part of the game for me was the lack of money when I first started. What I like best about being Opti now is being able to fly any Octavian ship and having the money to equip it as I choose. I'm really going to hate having to level up and build my money from the ground up. I just won't hate it as much as not having a Jumpgate at all.

Whatever happens and however it's done, I will stick with JumpGate and OAS until they pull the plug. Sine Timor, Sine Par. Contego Octavius!

Re: Jumgate Evolution replacing or concurent with Jumpgate Classic?

Why get rid of Jumpgate Classic at all? I mean, Westwood Studios still has servers running for playing multiplayer Command & Conquer, which is TWELVE years old. Are there not still multiplayer servers for the original Quake?

It's not like Jumpgate Classic takes a lot of server space or bandwidth with the few players it has now, right? Why not keep it?

Re: Jumgate Evolution replacing or concurent with Jumpgate Classic?

Oh, uh, I guess I should have been clearer: Jumpgate Classic should be retired once Jumpgate Evolution goes retail live. Of course Jumpgate Classic should continue to run as long as it isn't a net drain on Netdevil's financials. I don't see how it should continue to run after Jumpgate Evolution goes live, however; if Jumpgate Evolution delivers on its promise then Jumpgate Classic will become completely redundant, and I can't imagine why new players would want to play it when the shinier, "funerer" Jumpgate Evolution is available.

I'm not so sure about acknowledgement for vets; it might be nice, but in all honesty there's something refreshing about the idea of everyone starting over from scratch, on a blank slate if you will. Leave the past behind, step boldly into the future with no fetters, and all that.

Regardless, I really can't see a place for Jumpgate Classic in a post-Jumpgate Evolution marketplace.

I think it would be nice to be flying along, seeing fresh names, and wondering if that person that just petaled is Aubrey.

Re: Jumgate Evolution replacing or concurent with Jumpgate Classic?

I think it should just take over, as most would want to move over to the new anyway. not that it should be imediate but give a 3 month warning that its shutting down to give people time to move over, get thier handles, ect...

I assume the current Jumpgate population is still under 300 active ? How much will it be after the Evo release ? will less than 100 active constitute leaving it open ?

Re: Jumgate Evolution replacing or concurent with Jumpgate Classic?

it is still up to devs.

2c's....

Keep Jumpgate Classic up and running until Jumpgate Evolution is ready to go live. Make a huge farewell party or some type of event (big flux invasion or free for all). And go to Jumpgate Evolution.

In reality, which one are you going to choose when you have both: Jumpgate Classic and Jumpgate Evolution?

JGCE is not getting any more updates folks.
