Jumpgate Evolution cheat prevention

Hi,

realizing that with Jumpgate Classic several user-written add ons are available, I wonder how the abuse of the knowledge if Jumpgate internals, mainly the structure of network packets, will be prevented by ND.
The only way I see is *not* to publish the network traffic packet structure, thus preventing user written add-ons based on knowledge of those structures.

No, certainly not.

But what I say is that with the knowledge of the games network packet structure, which is feeding the client with current infos of other players positions in the sector, etc., it is possible to manipulate the mouse pointer to your own needs .
And the game server has no chance to notice that, because there is no indication whether the data in the packet is coming from the client or from a 'filter' between client and server.
Saying this, checksum and crypting for outgoing packets comes into mind...

There has been cheating in Jumpgate Classic - a lot of that!

Therefore, preventing cheating in Jumpgate Evolution will be a big challenge for ND to master for the success of Jumpgate Evolution!

I can tell you this, there are clients out there that some have used in other games that essentially will display a radar screen of every player within a given radius. Essentially with this client you could have radar that far exceeds the distance of any radar in game. That would be a pretty big advantage. Now actual packet manipulation is a different thing and potentially much more dangerous. I imagine it would be much harder to pull of a as well but Im sure there are 1000 super geeks that would get more pleasure building a cheat than they would playing the game.

Ok this thread has been used to name mechanisms to cheat with and linked to such. That post and one that quoted it, have been deleted and this thread will now be closed at the request of several members. This is NetDevil's issue of which they have the technical aptitude to handle. There is no sense educating people on how to cheat.
