Re: Jumpgate Evolution Dev Journal -Accessibility
He does draw a good comparison, however I notice he doesn't talk about how many people prefer to play Chess against another player (PvP) vs. how many like to play against a computer/AI (PvE).
Nor does he mention how many people quit Chess when then loose a piece and how Chess should have fewer penalties for when you lose a piece. Anyhow, all in all he does draw a good comparison in the section where he talks about making "Chess2". I agree with that section whole heartedly, hence the reason I like Starcraft more then Total Annihilation.....One has relatively few units compared to the other, but it much more accessible to the new player who doesn't want to have to memorize everything before playing. |

Re: Jumpgate Evolution Dev Journal -Accessibility
Chess has endured the ages. It is a well balanced game and there is no need for a Chess II. When your Chess set is worn out you simply get a new one. Or you can draw lines on the table. It doesn't matter. It's about the game play not the craftsmanship. And the game plays great as demonstrated by it's endurance in the face of much prettier games.
In Chess you suffer loss for bad decisions. Yet people still play it and enjoy it. Some that are new to the game may cry fowl when they suddenly fall victim to en passant. They may insist it's not fair and not part of the rules. To them you seem to be forcing your own rules on them. But they soon learn that this is part of the game and they either stop playing or continue on with their newfound knowledge. There are no safe zones in Chess. You must plan ahead and protect your pieces with other pieces. Sometimes you have to sacrifice one to save another. In order to achieve the goal of total destruction of ones enemy you have to see the whole board and each pieces role on that board, and in the battle. You have to understand the big picture. If you focus on one piece at a time you will surely lose all. I volunteer at local chess tournaments occasionally. And while losing is always the worst feeling and winning is the greatest feeling, dignity an honor bridges the gap between these feelings. The victor and the loser always stand together and shake hands. Knowing that next time there may be a different outcome at the end of the great battles. |

Interesting article. I like how talked about how upgrading chess wasn't needed. I guess Jumpgate Classic wasn't as classic since he now thinks it needs a complete redesign. :\

Isnt it wonderfull how chess can survive as a game maybe even our own, humans, existence. When you think about that, thats beyond belief. That humans are able to create something that can survive for so long.
I wonder what the creator tought when he created chess.. did he know that it will be one of the moster popular games ever? is it possible to create something like chess today, not a chess clone, but a game that is able to be so simple, but so fun, challenging and still be able to capture all kind of people that most will never get tired of it, becasue the game can never (IMO) be mastered 100%. I dont think so. Not even all gaming companies today combined together can do this, because their weakness is money. |

Well, I for one loved Stellar Crisis, simple web game, turn based, math knowledge helps calculate moves. Very simple, I used to play a turn daily, it was awesome, perhaps I should upload a pic of its map, well, its random, so a pic of one of the maps I've played.

I can't imagine that chess is exactly the same as it always was. We learn new moves from masters, we learn what not to do from mistakes in the past. You evolve as you play more because playing the same exact game every time isn't going to net you any wins. |
