Depending on how its setup, yeah....ideally youd need three screens. But I dont agree with the 'its unfair advantage, disable it'. The advantage is really minimal. For me, multi-screen gaming is more about immersion. In Jumpgate, the only competitive advantage I can think of for having multi-screens is lining up for docking or other things.

Re: Multiple screens for Jumpgate Evolution?

My only point was that IF multiple screens give a tactical advantage to fighting then they should consider limiting the screen modes to just widescreen and standard since the vast majority of players aren't using multiple monitors anyway.

But, IF multiple screens does NOT give a combat advantage then let em rip.

Re: Multiple screens for Jumpgate Evolution?

Of coarse having your side views is going to give an advantage, you don't have to HAT over to the sides, you just look at the side monitors. Thats kind of a no-duh thing.

However, not many people can afford a 3 monitor system, sure we can dream, and think about it, but when it comes down to it, I would say less than 1% of the players will actually be able to do it.

So why even waste time coding for it?

The ability to see more in combat will always be an advantage. It is how that ability is harnessed and controlled that is important.
I've always thought the ability to have a second monitor and even use it for the hat control would be amazing.
The ability to see more simply makes situational awareness easier. Those that are hard to kill and still kill themselves generally do this better than the average Joe.

Re: Multiple screens for Jumpgate Evolution?

Yep, a good pilot is all about situational awareness. Knowing where you are in the fight is what keeps you alive and keeps you from getting ganked from multiple angles. Keeping your speed up, and your enemies out of range is the #2 thing to make you a great pilot, #1 being the best aim.

If you can't hit what you aim at then you could be smack dab in the center of a LCD sphere and it wouldn't matter. This is where the technology of gaming is headed. Nerfing FOV would be like forcing us all to play in SVGA because some people have old systems. You would also need to ban TrackIR and quality joysticks and gaming mice and steroids of course.

Re: Multiple screens for Jumpgate Evolution?

The only place where "peripheral vision really" makes a difference would be in PvP -- and there only nominally. Furthermore if you do not have an option to turn off your cockpit view (as some have suggested, and which I endorse), then much of that additional view you get with three monitors (to me two would be a disadvantage -- as GG pointed out) is the insides of your ship -- nice for the immersive effect, but little tactical advantage.

There is more true PvP advantage if you have a single huge monitor (i.e. 42+" HDTV), since everything is magnified and aiming becomes easier.

Re: Multiple screens for Jumpgate Evolution?

Yeah I agree with ambro...having a large monitor makes aiming easier and is therefore a bigger tacticle advantage than being able to see peripherally. The benefit of multi-monitors during pvp is minimal, imo...your target is typically infront or behind you, viewing left to right isn't going to benefit your fight much.
