Netdevil what do you have against glass????
Ok I understand that i Jumpgate Classic there was no glas and just black screens. But then I was supprised to see a AA game also had black screens even though it was such a high end game in graphics when it came out.
Now Im even more suppriced to see that its black screens in both the blow up the town FPS and Jumpgate Evolution. Seriously why not have glass and a cockpit inside. You can have it at the closest LOD and on the long ones you can have your painted glas. But when up close in a battle it would make such a huge imersion impact to actually see the pilot in the enemy ship. Really dosent have to be a customized avatar or anything like that. Just to see life in the ship would be great. For AA it would have done tons to actually see the inside of the car. Imho the black screens give a "we didnt have the energy to finish the product" kind of feel. For the FPS I mean all helmets having black visiors come on its soo much cooler to see some parts of the face through the helmet and it adds to the overall feel of the product. Remember the toy cars from when you where a kid. The cheap made in china ones that you always got but didnt want they had black screens but the cool ones that always where too expencive for your folks they had see through glas and interrior. Tex |

Re: Netdevil what do you have against glas????
Bah, I hated seeing the enemy pilot in his cockpit in AH, because the models were always terrible and it just reminded me I was playing an online game. I WOULD love to see highly-detailed, reflective black opaque cockpits, though. That way, if someone is roleplaying a fat ugly blue-skinned cargo merchant, it's not ruined by a generic skinny pale-skinned dweeb model.

Re: Netdevil what do you have against glass????
Actually... seeing a Mirror finish on the outside of the ships is the most realistic thing. From the outside you would never see the pilots on the inside. Due to many things such as the Insane brightness of stars in space, solar radiation, etc. most of the ships windshields would look like the visors on space suits we have now in the real world.
So to be honest Black is more accurate than see-thru glass; though mirrored glass would be the most accurate. A great example of this is if you read any Ben Bova sci-fi novel you will note that even in his (and most people's) futuristic view of space the mirror finish windshields and visors are still the only way... providing a counter argument to "but in the future we will have some super duper technology that lets us see through windshields in space"... because the mechanics of light reflection and refraction really doesn't change. I think I like Anvil's idea better than clear glass.
A reflection would be really cool, you could get up right on someone and see your own ship in their cockpit. However I don't know if thats possible with them trying to keep the graphics requirements down, but it sure would be cool |
