As for Jumpgate not being able to run on the oldest computers anymore, I think it should be about time to raise the system requirements up to at the most 600Mhz along with 256MB ram and a 64MB 3d video card.

I work at some company dismantling computers and I see a lot of P3s and older that people got rid of.

I think that has already been addressed.

Re: New min spec for Jumpgate

As long as I can run the new updated game smoothly with this laptop that uses a Radeon XPress 200M, I would be a happy camper.

I have never updated my computer in ages because I never had the ability to afford to make my laptop any faster. When I had the money to upgrade my computer, we ended up getting a laptop instead so there goes that type of idea.

I would also recommend that Jumpgate specs should be something similar to what EVE online has now.

When I was checking out the combat prototype test from that newer space mmo that has a flight engine similar to Jumpgate and the graphics were so high-poly that it was like a slide show performance.

@Scorch

Keep those questions comming. And most likely it would be a good idea to post some on jossh forums too(if you did, nevermind then) .

I'm sorry but those are ridiculously low requirements that would not really offer much of an improvement over the current game. I know it's what you are stuck with, I too have a hopelessly outdated system, but reality is reality. To meet the current demands of gamers they are going to have to have far higher minimums than that. Especially in the graphics and CPU requirements.

Re: New min spec for Jumpgate

Well my laptop is not just outdated but rather stuck on this integrated Graphics Card which is a Radeon XPress 200M. Yeah the CPU processor is faster on this laptop than the computer I have but the graphics card really isn't.

Re: New min spec for Jumpgate

Looking at the new Steam numbers is always helpful, thanks!

What is the video memory on that Radeon Xpress 200M card?

Higher poly counts and higher res textures consume video memory quickly, but we are working on a number of ideas to scale this back to again run on as many cards as possible. I want to see LOTS of people in space again. It was fun right before release in 01 when we would have 250+ pilots all in the same sector running on 9600 modems.

Thanks for all the posts all!

Re: New min spec for Jumpgate

It's 128MB.

I wonder if it would be possible to be able to use the new updated graphics for Jumpgate to have a settings feature where the older or lower cards like the Radeon 9200 can run smoothly using the lowest detail settings, and the higher end cards like Geforce 6800 and above can run the game on the highest detail settings smoothly.

Re: New min spec for Jumpgate

For comparison, and i'm just saying, certainly i'm not suggesting anything. I'm not nearly smart enough to do that. just saying.

Vista Requirements: (you might recognize Vista as the operating system that modern 'new' computers are loaded with, and the operating system that 90% of the community will be using in a year)

1 Gig Ram (i think 512 might be bare minimum, but trust me, it doesn't work)
80 Gig Hard Drive
128MB video card

I'm obviously not suggesting jumpgate might also require this. But if we are at all interesting in the 'industry standard'....

Also, the competition knows this, and might design a game based, at least loosely, around these types of numbers. Maybe.

I do the purchasing for our computer shop, so I feel I am somewhat qualified in offering this. If I were the one in your shoes planning the upgrades and whatnot, I would look at something in the neighborhood of a 256MB video card in the 7300GS area (the 7600GS gives you even more power, but it starts to become exclusive -- in that it would require alot of older machines to be upgraded). To plan for anything less that that would not really be much of an increase. Granted, it will take you to DX8/DX9a, but it will not allow you to do alot of the nicer effects I think you must look for.

Personally, I am running a Radeon 9600 with 128MB, and while it still performs admirably, it will not run anything that was put out in the last 2 years with any degree of performance. Hence, I am looking to finally upgrade. While it is a good thing that you are looking to be as all-inclusive as possible, I think that you have to decide where to set the bar based on the performance you want to see.

Just my two cents.

Re: New min spec for Jumpgate

Any chance you could build in a minimum IQ level aswell ?. Granted we might lose some players but some are worth losing IMO.
