Aside from giving that type of player a goal, and serving as some measure of progress, we don't. I do like being able to gain political clout over NPCs though.

I would rather pay off the NPCs for that clout with credits. That might make a good money sink for squad leaders come to think about it.

You'd rather go into the game and have access to all ships from the start? What good would missions of any style be then?

Absolutely. There are many different ways to recognize that sort of achievement through NPC means. Flightsims for example have 'perk points' for shooting down enemies, or hauling equipment, that can be used for elite planes. We just have to get creative for players that actually like to 'grind' in a game.

Personally, I like a credit only model. If you have the credits, you can fly it. Its a pure skill game....we should work towards a game design that does not cut into that.

What about the EvE way, where every squad can get blueprints for the ships and build them. So instead of power leveling at the beginning, you are mining like mad so you can build....

I was thinking of how different a game Jumpgate Classic would have been if you didn't get your ship hull back when you died and had to buy a new one....

It would have been great. Not only would we have had PVP and Trader/Hauler squads, we would have had Industrialist squads provoking warfare just so they could sell more ships!
