Re: Planets and lunar bodies

Maybe in Jumpgate III or Jumpgate IV we could have landing on planets (ala Spaceflight II) where you could bargain/barter with the natives at trading posts or mine resources; find new plants/animals etc. On high-technology worlds I can't see allowing jump-capable craft to land, particularily with our surgically altered bodies. Perhaps on primitive or low technology planets we could use robatic avatars to explore, do business, etc.

Cool ideas, but I wouldn't slow down Jumpgate Evolution's release for any of it either.

Re: Planets and lunar bodies

Atmospheric flight could be done, its not a whole new flight modal, its merely adding two new forces to the existing ones, gravity and the lift provided by the wings or what ever.

But is it worth it? Would it add substantially to the game? Doubt it. Lets get it finished and then, in beta try out the new ideas please. lets not waste too much time.

How is that ship going to provide lift? You have to remember, the ship designs are based for space.....

The oct fighter is even worse, there is no way that ship would be able to do anything but fall like a brick.

Or are you saying that you have to use special airplane like ships for flying into atmosphere? I guess that makes more sense because the ships will need extra plating/heat protection, and also will need low mass so they don't have to travel at ridiculous speeds to produce lift.... Not to mention they will need wings capable of proving lift in the first place.

If this implemented, I vote that the current Nasa Space shuttle model be available

Re: Planets and lunar bodies

I don't care for being able to fly to or on planets so much but I always thought it would be cool if when you land on a station you can actually enter a First Person perspective and have guns, shields, etc... just like any other FPS.

I mean how cool would it be to lay siege to an enemy Faction Station and after getting its defenses down you could land on it with a bunch of other people and you gotta shoot your way to the... whatever... the core or something... and blow it up. I love Space Sims and I like FPS's and I am still waiting for a perfect blend of the two in one Role Playing game.

The Space shuttle actually can't provide enough lift to support itself. It is only designed to fall gracefully.

Re: Planets and lunar bodies

ehm.. they do fly all kinds of ships in star wars and star trek from space to planets.. its not aerodynamic its some antigravity crap.. besides if you strap big enough engines, anything can fly..

Agree. I didn't mean that the whole idea would be easy to implement, just the physics engine.

Anyway, this is a Sci-Fi mmo. I'm certain some unbelievable story could be concocted as to how that ship could fly in an atmosphere!

Re: Planets and lunar bodies

They should just use futuristic stargates to find curiously primitive societies on different planets

Net, you seem to be forgetting that this is a FUTURISTIC space game, hence who needs wings when you have anti-gravity thrusters or some other sort of propulsion?!

Starshatter is also one of the games that had a transition from space to atmospheric for fighters and bombers. Trying to do it in cap ships lead to "BAD THINGS HAPPENING"

BSG did it. Kinda.

Voyager could land on planets.
