Question to Scorch about sectors
Hey Scorch,
You guys have talked alot about populating the sectors. I personally was getting claustrophobia in the small Jumpgate Classic sectors. Imho the biggest immersion problem wasnt the fact that they where empty but the fact that they where so damn small. I mean a large sector was a sector that had what 80.000 meters between the gates. 80km is laughable you drive it in your yugo in an hour. I dont know maybe the "wooowooo metric crazy stuff" makes it feel huge for americans but in all honesty it doesnt work. The problem you have with the Jumpgate Classic secors is that once you get far out from the origo/0.0.0 in the scene/sector then you start to notice the float rounding error bounces. Still at least the poor mans solution of scaling (moving the problem further out) is viable. Id like to hear little about what you guys think about sector size. That you want them more dencly populated is clear but how big!! Size does matter!! ![]() Thanks in advance Tex |

Re: Question to Scorch about sectors
Does anyone really go outside the "box" created by the x number of gates other then the artifact hunters? There really wasn't a reason. Maybe it'd help to have more places with LONG hauls between gates. Maybe some interesting stuff like... dense asteroid fields, abandoned (or neutral, or pirate) stations..
Original DID feel claustrophobic at places, but only AFTER you got out of the original ship and up to something just a BIT faster. |

Re: Question to Scorch about sectors
I don't have a good answer because I don't honestly know yet. We are still working on needs to happen to make the maps full enough they feel exciting but big enough that they feel vast.

Re: Question to Scorch about sectors
I'm guessing that since the beta sign-up page says actual in-game screenshots, that they are working on the game.

Re: Question to Scorch about sectors
.. but equally obvious there's still a LOT that hasn't been decided yet. Hence the questions and Scorch's admited uncertainty on the matter.

Re: Question to Scorch about sectors
It has been confirmed by scorch that they are indeed way past the pen and paper stage and if you read a few of his posts you’ll see that work is indeed moving along.
As for sectors I have always thought the gates were too close to one another and the map was way to small. But on the first point you slip into problems of how to transverse the distances from gate to gate, without losing the interaction between pilots, ok various ways around this but the only ones I can think off pre coffee is out of Eve, so ill leave it there. |

Re: Question to Scorch about sectors
Just making a joke since in just about every thread you read, he says "We're not quite sure." "We haven't decided yet." "We haven't really thought about that."

Re: Question to Scorch about sectors
This is off-topic but I couldn't help but laugh at TexMurphy's mention of us Americans being mystified by the metric system, because it's so painfully true in most cases. Being in the military we work a lot with metric units because we have a lot of cross-functionality due to NATO standards. When you talk to the average civilian and discuss meters instead of yards, it gets confusing as hell. And more often than not you get that "deer in the headlights" look too.
