Re: Scorch's IRC Interview
Imo Pos economy is the best one, but thats what I got used to and I guess I cant blame you all for your ways... its weird that most EU people would embrace this capitalistic style of game, while US were more of a social style, when in real life its oposite..
Anyway, as most of you know last days on EU were anarchy.. and while it was fun for those few days, I realised how meaningless the entire game became.. It didnt help either when MT patch came later and made the game even more meaningless for me. I just cant do pvp without some RP behind it, its what made the game for me.. The US server didnt gave me that opportunity, it gave me the feeling quake in space.. While you guys had your WoW we had our RP events.. I guess its just how it was.. I just hope Jumpgate Evolution is more sandbox then current Jumpgate is.. if it is not.. then I wont play.. its as simple as that. |

But looked at in other ways, the US station-based econ allowed for much less dependence and much more "individual freedom." It is also consistent with a culture where "shortage" is virtually unheard of and one-stop-shopping (WalMart) is a way of life.

Re: Scorch's IRC Interview
Posting way late here. A couple thoughts:
#1) As time goes on and NetDevil continues their iterative method of coding this game, it moves farther and farther away from Jumpgate Classic #2) I'm pretty excited about #1. #3) A lot of vets I see here are having a hard time accepting #1. #4) I don't think anyone really can tell what the game is truly going to be like from the interviews I've read. It's like looking a car tire through a tube and trying to figure out what kind of engine it has. We just can't see enough of the pieces to know. |

As one of the "vets", I do not feel very happy about simplifying the game. While the accessibility in Jumpgate Classic might be a deterrent to some, in the end it will help the game. Why? Easy game means that you can quickly finish it or not even get to the end because there is no challenge. People that look for something easy will leave anyway because there will always be something else, something new. Other item I want to touch is PvP. By introducing items that are “better” than the normal items, you take away skill. Battles will be determined then by either numbers or equipment. People will not PvP until they are sure they get “decent” items. This will lead to general lack of PvP. That is not the game I want to play. In Jumpgate Classic, you could do well in lower level ship. Equipment for the most part did not count. It was all about the skill. On positive note, hauling and mining needed to be overhauled. I'm glad that it will be different. |

#2) That's great but others have a different opinion, Which is okay. #3) This statement seems rather arrogant. They are not required to accept it. Not accepting it is a valid choice and the game will fail if it is not accepted by enough potential players. That's what happens in a free market. Only the good games survive. The loudest voice has it's way. If they are just in it for the money then the money supply has to speak up about what it wants. It does not just have to blindly accept. #4) That's just a silly irrelevant analogy. Who buys a car with crappy tires? As a consumer we can and must make decisions about where we spend our money. Even more so in a recession. And to say we can't see the direction this game is taking by the statements and attitudes of those creating it is just asinine. Of course we can. Everyone has their ideal game and everyone has their cutoff point on how far the game can wander from that ideal before they don't pay and play. I'm glad you're excited but at the same time many others aren't. Many are apprehensive that they spent all these years supporting Jumpgate only to be slapped in the face. Many feel they have been led on in the early news of the new game only to see a change of tune from NetDevil. Many have many different opinions that disagree with you, me, and everyone else. That's why we have forums so we can voice those opinions, not just accept what comes our way like caged animals waiting for food. |

Right now I'm playing some Warhammer online and I'll be playing the WoW expansion when it's released in November. When it comes to gaming, if I can't play it right now then it's not worth my time. I truly feel bad for folks who think that all their support for a videogame for "years" meant something. It's just a videogame. Life is too short to be spent waiting for something that may never show up. |

![]() I know I've learned some important lessons: 1. No matter how much potential you see in something, unless you buy the rights that potential will likely not be reached. 2. In the event someone who sees the potential as much as you gets control of the property, when he starts bringing it closer to that potential his boss will notice. Then his boss will throw a bunch of money at it and at the same time put design control back in the hands of the wrong people. |

Re: Scorch's IRC Interview
Hell ya. I try to play every MMO out there. WoW is an incrediblle game that every game designer could learn from. It's not twitch gameplay, but everything blizzard does just oozes quality and polish. You don't have to like the game, but I think you have to respect how good Blizzard is at what they do. |
