Re: Scorch's IRC Interview

Wait.. really? We are going to slam WOW because it is successful? No, we are going to slam it because it isn't 100% original. Actually, we are going to slam it because it's only the most popular program - game or otherwise - since the invention of the computer.

Of course wow uses ideas that pre-existed it. Anybody really going to assert that spaceships didn't predate jumpgate? Or that the idea of a 'transportational wormhole' was invented by netdevil? Of course wow uses a hodgepodge of sources, it'd be impossible not to.

I admire blizzard for lots of things, including wow. They found a niche, beat the heck out of the other people trying to occupy it, and continue to generate support and popularity within a huge segment of the population even years after it's release.

I can only wish that blizzard would do the same for the space sim/combat genre. A space sim/combat that had a ton of marketing/sales/development support with multi-level playing concepts? Yeah, i'd be in line for that.

Re: Scorch's IRC Interview

Other than Eraser, I don't think anyone slammed Wow. Personally, I don't know enough about it to "slam" it.But it is rather tiring hearing about it constantly. As was pointed out, commercial success is not necessarily an indicator of "product quality."The problem is, as GG pointed out, that NetDevil looks at Wow and sees $$$$$$. Can't blame them completely. But those $$$$$s can be a problem if they blind you to your own task at hand.

Re: Scorch's IRC Interview

True, 'slam' may have been overstating the case. Though I stand by the observation that, in general, WoW is poorly perceived by us Jumpgate folks. It's not nearly as cool as we are.

Still, if a program makes money, it must be for a reason. That reason may likely be that the people spending the money are silly brainwashed sheep, but if the silly-brainwashed-sheep segment of the population is the segment that spends all the money, you might as well design a game that they think is good.

I doubt anybody is going to market a game to the cynical-full-time-job-holding group.. we just don't spend enough money on games in the first place.

Besides.. i'd bet a year's salary that if a game came out that I thought was 'perfect', it would be a huge commercial flop. I've got no delusions of my game-development skills. And to make matters worse, I actually spell out the words 'you' and 'through'. So the odds of me liking a popular game of any sort is pretty slim.

I'd still love to be one of the founding fathers of WoW. I could buy _so_ many cases of Ensure... I'd never have to search for breakfast again!

Re: Scorch's IRC Interview

Actually, I'm often shocked at the number of old Jumpgate PvPers who are into Wow. For me the interest level is about the same as my interest in watching Lifetime. But I'm 100% with you on the idea that Ambro's "perfect game" would probably be a complete commercial flop.

P.S. they are definitely not as cool as we are!

Griz what is up with you?

If anyone understands exactly what ND is trying to do with Jumpgate Evolution it's you. You literally just summarized in one sentence.

Why are you still here? I don't get it.

I'm still on these forums because Jump wouldn't ban me.

Also, I recently took a personality test: Personality Test

and it said I was an ENTP. It must be somewhat accurate as this is the rest of why I'm still here:

Quote:
ENTPs are fluent conversationalists, mentally quick, and enjoy verbal sparring with others. They love to debate issues, and may even switch sides sometimes just for the love of the debate.
As far as Jumpgate Evolution goes...i'm following it mainly to see how much more important gear is than skill in the PvP part
