Re: Shipbuilding?
Plus it would be a big problem getting all the clients to update every time you change something.

Re: Shipbuilding?
I don't think there's any need for written words on the ships. Definitely not something to bother implementing at this stage. Give us low lag, good combat and functional economy before you devote time to purely aesthetic fluff. Don't get me wrong, I love aesthetic fluff, but graffiti on ships won't make up for poor game balance.

Re: Shipbuilding?
A related question:
Is it possible in-game for a ship going in direction X to kill its engines and flip head-over-heel, using its momentum to continue on in the original direction (effectively ending up going backwards at high speed) so that it can shoot a ship that was following it? This was a classic Star Fury maneuver, and I wondered whether it's possible in Jumpgate or Jumpgate Evolution? |

Re: Shipbuilding?
On the writing on the hull... i see no reason that a callsign/pilot name can't be put on the ship. That has already been through various acceptable filters as well as is currently already shown/sent information via your targeting interface. So, the data should be there, why not just put it on the ship? Any other writing on the ship would be a bad idea. Also like the idea of color customization... as long as the colors fit the faction.

Re: Shipbuilding?
There's still the challenge of taking the text and mapping it on the ship, which is definitely a non-trivial piece of code. But yeah, I think Milkman's onto something there. Maybe another option would be a library of prescreened/accepted avatar-style logos that you could have cast onto the ship in place of writing.

Re: Shipbuilding?
I can see your callsign being put on the ship, thats fine. Also a default set of logos could be fine as well, but thats time taken away from the art department which apparently has its work cut out with all these new graphics.
As for flipping backwards to shoot an attacked, VERY VERY bad idea. You will see when you try it the first time. |
