Simulation vs MMO

As nearly each and every tidbit about Jumpgate Evolution is released it obviously becomes less and less of a space simulation, and more and more of an MMO set in space. They may be onto something.

However, I strongly suspect that Jumpgate Evolution will attract people that want to play a space simulation game. I don't how significant that number will be in comparison to the MMO audience, but I feel very strongly that simulationists will be greatly disappointed.

I think it would behoove ND to keep the simulationists the game attracts, and the best way for them to do that is to pretty up Jumpgate Classic like they originally intended to do. While it's ugly and old, it's still the best. The code is there, and it's even got it's own little server.

Think about it, Mr. Brown, pretty please.

GG, why are you posting this?

Unless, Jumpgate Classic gets serious influx of players, it will not get a proper dev team.

Because Radi, if you don't ask for it, how will they know you want it? I'm not commenting on the likelyhood of it happening, but I'm not throwing any rocks at GG for trying.

I'm trying to point out where the serious influx of players might come from. The typical level grind in MMOs has never fit in with the simulationist viewpoint, and if they gloss over Jumpgate Classic with some new graphics (and new station interface..come on man, that looks like 8 bit nintendo stuff) they can catch those customers that they may have lost otherwise.

@GG

Jumpgate Classic was, is, and will be a niche game.

Which one will people pick if they have choice between Jumpgate Classic and Jumpgate Evolution? Most of them will pick Jumpgate Evolution. We would like to think otherwise.

I doubt that new eye candy could bring alot of people back (by people I mean those that already played the game previously).

@WB

*throws some more rocks at GG*

Yes, you might be right. Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Don't you think that they would have done it a long time ago?

Yes, my point is that when they decide that Jumpgate Evolution wasn't exactly what they're looking for they might give Jumpgate Classic a spin if they make it pretty. Jumpgate Classic's niche is a lot bigger than it seems, and I'd wager a lot of those people are still looking for a skill-based-gear-balanced space combat simulator....or they found one I haven't heard of yet.

Re: Simulation vs MMO

I don't really understand what you're getting at.
Both games are MMO's. Both are sims, Jumpgate Evolution is just a bit easier to get into with the slight increased drag and two flight modes... And the graphics have nothing to do with either...

Jumpgate Classic isn't really an standard MMO. It's more like a free roaming universe you can explore and interact with. Once you hit level 9, you can go anywhere in the game.

Not a standard MMO. In standard MMOs (like Jumpgate Evolution) there must be grind. However, you're more than welcome to continue to not understand.

With brokered everything.

Even if there is no level grind (and there is, to 22 or so), there is absolutely a skill grind which takes much much longer.

Once you've grinded out those skills you can do level 22/26 in a couple days of playing (mostly alone after L9).

I dunno, being an easy kill would get the quants going after you letting your more experienced team members do some damage. Besides, getting better at a game isn't grinding, it how to get xp from a simulationist's view

Re: Simulation vs MMO

spending hours each week in sim just to get better at shooting people in a game isn't grinding? It may not be grinding for gear, and it's fun, but still...
