I hate to say it, but this whole argument strikes me as being dumb. Not being able to land an escort as a hauler is a result of low server population more than anything else. It has nothing to do with any perceived design flaw inherent to haulers and miners. Providing them with turrets is just a cop out that would upset ship balance.

I also seriously doubt we'll be seeing civilian ships made invulnerable, as it would make economic warfare into nothing but a form of PvE, and further seperate the PvPers and PvEers as you'd essentially be doing away with the only aspect of the game that would encourage the two styles of gameplay to interact.

It's a result of the tag system. Because of the tag system, civs were usually safe, which made escorting usually dull. Giving them the ability to defend themselves paves the way for the removal of the tag system.

Ship balance is going to have to be completely redone anyway, unless the starter ships are the only new ones.

Re: Turrets this and turrets that...

Turrets seem to me to be a good idea... I disagree that they paint a target on a civilian ship, as ppl keep telling me space is dangerous .

Having read through most of what everyone has been saying i think it comes down to balance. A TUG with a couple of turrets would be a menace in PvP if there were nothing to combat it. So you have something to combat it, bombers. Nuke a tug and it goes bye-bye. Bombers are no match for a fighter and a single fighter has a hard time taking out a tug. Seems to me that even from a realism stand point a single fighter should not easily be able to take out a ship that is 10 times its size.

The issue i had as a hauler in Jumpgate Classic wasn't with packs of PvPers, it was with the lone greifer. The guy/gal who was out to ruin someone elses day because they could.
The issue i had as a PvPer was that 1v1, if i was skilled enough(and sometimes with no skill whatsoever) i could kill anything, even the largest hauler and in rather a short time to boot.

Its just my opinion...and isn't beta testing meant to hash out this stuff?!?!? If turrets don't work then don't include them, but the idea has some merit and should, i think, be at least tested.

Interesting point, dahalb. Ship balance is not on a per ship basis, it's on a fleet basis. Bring a buddy in a bomber to help pirate. If the tug doesn't comply, nuke him. If he has an escort, kill him in your fighter.
