Re: Jumpgate Evolution: Some Observations of The Meet and Greet at GDC 2008.
Jump and Hurricane, thank you both for your reports. Your eloquence exceeds my expectations.
I really don't know what to think about the lack of hauling in Jumpgate Evolution. Hauling was always a major source of cash in-game for me, so I'd hate to see it gone. I spent a LOT of time hauling Z from A to B for a profit or to stock stations, etc. Mining sounds a lot more interesting though I have to say I did get a lot of reading done while mining in Jumpgate Classic. Then again, depending on the cargo hold size of PvPers, I suppose I could have an occupation as a hauler-of-loot for PvP squads (if OAS doesn't make the transition to the new game). And "New Game" is exactly what this sounds like to me, not an "upgrade" of Jumpgate Classic regardless of the name. In fact from the sound of it, little beyond the game name and the faction/nation names sounds like it made the transition. Perhaps this will be a 'good thing'. All-in-all the descriptions make the game sound much more addictive and immersive than Jumpgate Classic. How the hell am I going to find the time to take care of RL AND Jumpgate Evolution? This could be a serious problem in the near future. |

We're actually working to make traditional hauling more interesting by providing a few variants, though of course they all boil down to haul X from A to B for profit. I may have the opportunity to post some more elaborate info on the framework being built in the near future, as its first incarnation (I know there will be several before we're done) has just started being implemented. |

Re: Jumpgate Evolution: Some Observations of The Meet and Greet at GDC 2008.
Yes Wild_Bill I said equipment hauling. If you read Hurricane's question it was regarding hauling equipment between faction stations. -=MACK=- made good money doing this. We never got into commodities and hauling stuff that's crafted or looted in our conversation with Scorch. The question was specific and the answer was specific. Let's not take it beyond that. That's why I suggested we might have to change our focus to "crafting and delivery". Delivery signifies hauling. Plus we have all seen the double container cargo ship pics. Must be something to haul with that one.
The question was asked because in the heyday of -=MACK=- we made our politics and fortune on bringing people the goods they needed to outfit their ships. If we can't make money hauling on equipment between faction stations then adjustments will need to be made to our roleplay. Such as crafting or looting and then hauling the equipment. |

Isty am I wrong to think no mater how equipment is aquired or created it will still have to be moved around no?

The equipment will be part of the ship.
No more Rush vs Burns, vs Impellers. Just Engines. |

Re: Jumpgate Evolution: Some Observations of The Meet and Greet at GDC 2008.
Hummm Interesting statement netburnr, but I saw Herman showing a press guy the ship and all the different guns / power plants / shields / engines / empty modx slots / etc. that you could choose upgrades for. Unfortunately A.) he was having a press meeting and B) he got pulled away and I couldn't get into a discussion with him about what I was seeing.
I remember someone saying before that you would buy a ship that would have equipment on it, and different ships would have different setups, but I don't think that meant there would be no equipment in the game. |

Re: Jumpgate Evolution: Some Observations of The Meet and Greet at GDC 2008.
OK - I thought the guys did a great job of the descriptions for what we heard and saw... but there are a few things I want to add. I unfortunately lived in a very loud house so even tho it was noisy I was able to focus a little better on some of the things Scorch was saying.
As for the missions.... It sounds to me like there will be a wide variety of missions, and depending on what you choose to do, once you get to the other side, you will have different choices. Also missions that are available to you may not be available to the person you are flying with. Some of the missions will be available to you based on your game play. Meaning pilots who's main game play is being a hauler, will not always be able to do the same mission as someone who's main game play is usually crafting ect. Same will go for your faction rating with different factions. The missions available to you will sometimes be depend on that. Some of the different kind of mission Scortch talked about were, You may be asked to go escort an AI, or you may be asked to shoot one down, or to just watch/scan what is going on in a sector. They are trying to be more creative vs as hurricane said "take Z from A to B". As for the equipment discussion I am reading..... Let me tell you what I understand. I am a little unsure of how the ships will come and weather they will be equipped when you first get them. But from what Scorch was talking about, when it comes to equipment there will be 2 ways of getting it. The lower end and lower level equipment will be available for purchase at station. But to get the higher end stuff, and higher quality stuff, it will have to be crafted. Scorch also mentioned taking ideas from pilots to there favorite space event, weather in movies, in a game ect., and seeing how they can implement a similar scenario in game. Again my understanding is that these are ideas they have and that they are trying to implement in the game and not necessarily how it is set up now. |
