ESRB Under Attack-News-112007-37390-gametap.com

Basically, Manhunt 2 for the Wii was given the "AO (Adult Only) rating which made it practically impossible to sell, so the makers of the game made a few small changes and sent it back, and got the "M (Mature) rating". Well now 4 senators have decided the best way to "protect" the children is to go after the ESRB because they think the game is too violent.

Seriously, the p*ssification of this nation really saddens me.

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

Well, if it has adult content then it should have an adult rating. There is just no way parents can keep up with what's what without some kind of rating. Whether the system is perfect or not will always be subjective. But as a parent of 4 I am glad I have something to judge it by. I still let my kids view/play some things with an M rating because I have deemed it ok for the sake of what good it has to offer. But a lot of it is just stuff I would never let a kid near and I am thankful that there is some help for me as a parent. I can't keep up with it all by myself.

Just because it's a game and it's for sale doesn't mean it's good.

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

The problem I have with them going after this particular game is this part:

Quote:
the game's Wii version takes advantage of that system's motion-sensitive controllers, allowing gamers to act out aggressive behavior.
Thats like saying people who played duck hunt are going to be gun toting maniacs because they were shooting a gunlike game device at poor defenseless ducks....Come on....

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

Well, I wouldn't let my kids play it for the simple reason that it's called "man hunt." Which says loads about the concept of the game.

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

Some months ago I went to my friends Printing company to be shocked by the view of a kid sitting on his mother's lap and watching youtube videos of terrorists killing hostages.

The reality is that things are going to get worse and the games and some other content is degrading the minds of kids around the globe. It may be a game, but it has consequences wether it was real or not, and in this case, manhunt... if you make a game like this... you know what you're getting into. They just pushed the envelope but found a big brick wall, so they pushed back and now can sell them.

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

What about the arguement that TV causes people to do stuff, like someone goes and watches Fast and The Furious and then goes out and tries to drive under a semi?

Wait, I think that happened...there goes my arguement...err.

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

Most people it has no effect on. But if it does it can be a disaster. Kids, however, are all impressionable and they don't always give obvious indications of where their state of mind is at.

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

Yes true, children are impressionable.

But doesn't the real fault lie in today's parents? Why do kids have the guns? Why are kids being left alone so they can go out and chop up the neighbors dog? Why should the rest of us not be able to play a game because they think some kid MIGHT do something?

Thats what I don't like about all these regulations they try to put in place.

In the case of this game, it was originally given a rating that would not even allow it to be sold in most stores...

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

Because in order to afford a home both parents are off on a 60 mile trek to work everyday. Ban the ownership of more than two homes and suddenly it's not an investment. Problem solved.

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

Well granted my mom didn't work after I was born, to raise me. Sure I didn't get all the toys I wanted, yes I had to get clothes second hand or from the discount racks. But I tell ya what, I'm glad I had a loving parent then all the newest toys....

Re: ESRB in trouble....again.

That's how we have raised our kids. My wife stayed home till the youngest was 8. And even now she gets off at 2:15 before school is out and she is off on Monday's when they get out early. That's why we moved so far from Silicon Valley and only I commuted. We never had much but we have good kids.

Unfortunately crooks drove the prices really high here and now you see the new people are gone all day and their kids are running amok. The good news is the headlines are full of the feds going after all the real estate agents that have been milking the prices higher here. It's something like 1 in 8 houses in foreclosure here. 4 on my street and one where they left with dinner still sitting on the table. Sad really and not ideal to raise children when you can't survive doing it.
