clicki-di-click-clicki-di-clack.

Well, the question we have to ask ourselves (or more specifically, that ND are undoubtedly asking themselves) is why do players get addicted to games like WoW. It's not the RP, skill development, realistic graphics, or mature community. So what is it? The whole challenge here is to recognize that these games have done something right. At the end of the day, ND needs subscribers...they have to figure out how to tap into the appeal that some other games have, while preserving what makes Jumpgate Evolution so unique.

Okay...that last sentence sounded like something a politician would say. I'm just going to cry in the corner if you need me.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

They just need to create their own unique appeal which is what these other games did. Frankly, if the old Jumpgate didn't have the funky graphics, many of the people that signed up and left would have played much longer. As long as they have fixed this and improve the unique features that already exist in Jumpgate then they will do fine.

If they were in such a tremendous need for subscribers they would be rushing this out. Thankfully they have Lego's to put the bacon in the pan and keep the lights on. Without a publisher telling them that 10,000 subscribers is not enough then this game will do fine.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

Related to that, I wonder what kind of player base they're anticipating. Does anyone know what sort of load they're testing the servers for? I'm sure they've designed the system to be upgradable if the game becomes a super hit, but they obviously won't want to spend the money on servers for a base of 20k if that's not realistically what they're going to be getting.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

There has been mention of Shards but nothing set in stone. Ultimately it all depends on how many people actually want to fly their own ship. We know the genre for riding the space bus is huge. However, real piloted flight in a space ship is another story. Only time will tell.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

Given that I'm in the UK, but will want to play with US friends, I hope they won't be enforcing regional shards. That will always lead to player complaints. Regionally recommended shards are one thing, since it tells people which server will have the lowest lag, but enforcing based on IP is very different.

Anyway, this is all way ahead of the game, since, as you say, they're only making some small noises about ti at the moment.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

I'm not sure you are aware of this but Jumpgate was on two servers for most of it's life. The EU server shut down a while back. Two different play styles evolved. You may see that tension arise in some conversation here and elsewhere.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

I definitely wasn't aware of it. Were the servers IP-restricted or just recommended?

Also, I'd love to hear about the different play styles, but I don't want to stir up bad feelings...

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

It was policy that EU players had to play there but it wasn't really enforced much if at all.

Don't know about Jumpgate Evolution specifically, but I believe Jumpgate Classic was designed to handle several thousand players online at at time. Obviously they never tested the design limits of Jumpgate Classic, so there's no way to be sure that what the built could handle the load, but I think it's safe to say they are thinking much bigger with Jumpgate Evolution.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

Actually, I remember the "Night of Experience" shortly after release. There were so many pilots on that the radar showed a wide flowing line between the anomaly and Hyperial station. And I believe this went on all night in multiple sectors. I must have died 10 times trying to dock amongst the horde. Of course, I had a few beers that helped me die.

Re: EvE has pissed off its playerbase

lol that sounded fun Jump..

Well, Badger, we from EU tend to think that everything was better over there..

The most annoying thing by being on US server is because of ping. 200ping. 30-40 on EU.

Then we had different Backstories.. The NPC characters were not the same. Economy worked differently. We had alot of germans who didnt talk english.. They had the German version of the game.. that was fun aswell..
