If they made it something similar to Jumpgate, it wouldn't be a problem. Using the same designs and names (down to the TRI symbol, if colored differently), though, is just asking for trouble if they go live with it.

Hmmm...I think they want to get sued. It looks like Jumpgate but with better graphics.
According to their main site it is a remake of Jumpgate. SourceForge.net: Open Jumpgate |

Technically Emulators are legal AFAIK as long as they don't charge money for service. Lineage 2 and EQ has em.

Hm, Opera 8 won't play thier website quite right. And IE6 only shows this:

I don't see how exact copies of the graphics, ship designs, and names could possibly be legal. But all that said, if it takes off and actually gets enough pilots to be fun, I'd probably d/l Firefox and play it. |

If they get it to the same stage as Jumpgate is currently, and get enough developers, they could take it a lot further than Jumpgate. Thinking of putting my name forward to it!
On the legal issue I couldn't say, surely they have researched this before starting. I've checked out the graphics engine they are using, its capable of some serious stuff. Screenshots don't do it justice, hope they try to take it further. Smeg |

I wish this project's media contents were more original than having Jumpgate's contents in the game doesn't matter if it was made from scratch or not.. just to be legally safe.
On the other note, it sounds like that it may be a dead project because the site hasn't been updated since October 2006. There are a large number of inactive projects on SF. |

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised that if the authors gave any thought to copyright issues at all, it was only as far as to suspect that a small company like ND wouldn't consider the OG team worth filing suit against.
A stupid idea to bet that way, maybe, but not exactly uncommon with the Open Source cult^H^H^Hrowd. ![]() |

Well, no answers to any questions so far, so you may all be right
If so its damn stupid to can a project after this length of time! I spent 2 years on a similar project before it was obvious it had ended. And the client already had more features the Jumpgate has currently! (Canned because of no-one knowing how to do the net code, hmmmm, maybe should check some of the new Open source network engines, should still have the code hanging about somewhere )Smeg |
