And now for something totally un-joystick related..

Anybody else ever play those text-only telnet games? I rather like them for these various 'downtimes' when the current cool games don't really hold my attention. Plus they are free. How do you beat that price?

Just curious who else is still stuck in the 80's multi-player game world.

Did MUDs predate BBS online "Door" games? I used to love playing Tradewars.

I never really did the BBS thing, so I would bet it predated the mud world. tho I know they ran concurrently for a long while, and likely still do, so i could be wrong. what did the BBS do that muds didn't?

You know, I can't remember. I know I was into the BBS thing for a good while as I was a sysop at MegaMedia BBS. And I know I was doing the MUD thing because it was cool. But what order or if concurrently, I don't recall. Alzheimer's is setting in fast.

We had a lot of games at MegaMedia. Then the owner Raaj had to leave the country all of a sudden. The last I Heard from him he produced a game called Sub Titans in Australia out of the reach of his hunters. He sent me a free copy.

I was sysop of a small local BBS many moons past. I used a BBS program called Wildcat, which was made by Mustang Software in Bakersfield, CA (Jump's "neighborhood"). My system was four 386s on a LANtastic peer-to-peer network, with a few SCSI CD drives for the downloadable shareware. Good times.

Multiplayer BBS Games were typically turn-based ascii games; other were single-player ascii games.

I had no concept of what online games were about. When I first heard about the Jumpgate beta, I was intrigued because it was about trading and fighting in space (like Tradewars was) . . . and when I finally got on and saw the graphics (i.e. a tad better than ascii) and flight physics and realtime interaction I think I wept. (What a n00b!)

Re: And now for something totally un-joystick related..

heh, diablo was my first introduction to online play, jumpgate came second. still the only two popular online games i've played, tho i did play this WoW beta spinoff for about a week. Crystal Blue or something like that.

I still like the text based stuff as a diversion because the imagination paints a pretty decent picture.. plus, on some muds, one can find a bit of real rp, not just "i'm killing you for reason X today" stuff. Good escapist kind of action.
