Re: Stargate SG1
Atlantis is getting better, now that they have Carter and the FireFly chick. SG1 was great, but like Atlantis, it can sometimes be a bit campy. I like them both, but they are examples of Old School episodic trek-like sci-fi. The problem is that nothing ever happens to drastically change the show or it's formula. So it ends up being the same old "Planet of the week" type stuff most of the time. Also, nothing ever really seems real. For example, when the villians capture members of SG1, they dont kill them or anything. They just kinda chillax w/ them and smoke a few bowls while SG1 rescues them.
BSG has brought Sci-Fi to the next level of grittiness and badassedry. Sometimes it can be a drama fest, and I agree that sucks. But overall, you have to give BSG props for providing a very real and dirty atmosphere. BSG has epic story arcs and is not afraid of change like other shows that are locked into episodic formulas, such as SG1 and Atlantis (and Star Trek minus some DS9).
For example, in the pilot episode of BSG they snapped a babies neck and nuked 6 billion people. Rock on. They arent afraid of stranding the crew on a planet for half a season, adding new Battlestar's into the mix (and later blowing them up spectacularly), or ripping out Tigh's eye, forming the extreme badass Tighclops.
BSG has epic space battles too. The battle where the Pegasus got blown up, for example, is one of the most awesome space battles i've seen on TV, and rivals a lot of the sci-fi movies i've seen.
Overall, I enjoy SG1 and Atlantis, but it's really just more of the same old Sci-Fi. BSG is trailblazing us towards the future.
