First Flight
This quick primer on controls would have been very handy! I would have done much better having read it first. But my real purpose my 1st time out was just to see if the game was playable on my XP laptop and/or how much of a pain it was to rig all my desktop peripherals to it.
The answer was yes it would play but playing on a 12" laptop sucks. I've got no bus keyboard port making it very awkward using my big old CRT with the laptop as keyboard. I didn't get around to plugging in the speakers or joystick, just moused it for a couple of missions (and flying with a mouse, well, sucks). Actually, I used the touchpad the very first flight. And then I hit a key or maybe the scrolling area of the touchpad or something and I could no longer steer the ship. I could only rotate my view and watch a drone kill me. Jump had given me some money, otherwise I would have started the game at -$50 instead of $50 ($100 death penalty). Still stuck in this mode, I couldn't do anything in the station until I plugged in a mouse and clicked the scroll wheel down to go back to mouse mode. Lag is almost unbearable (up to 1 minute in station for various UI screens to show up after clicking on them). Missions via agents (fixers) is obviously cooler than a dry mission computer. Cruise speed (up to 500 with minimal steering instead of 100 in the starter ship) is really nice. Getting the cheap Explorer ship (name escapes me) got it up to 600/120 and a second gun. Thanks again Jump for the cash and the good shield gun. GG gave me a broken gun and parts for OneEye to fix it (and a case of ammo), but I only made 1 more flight after that and didn't have any ammo loaded. Thanks again. Now I have a good armor gun too, if I can just figure out how to load ammo. Cut screens for jumping seems a bit awkward since Jumpgate was able to do jumps seamlessly 10 years ago. But I can overlook that since it has to load a lot of pretty stuff. It seems quite lame to just hit R instead of physically docking my ship or flying through the jump rings. I really need to either get XP on the desktop or figure out how to make the game play on W2k to give it a fair chance. Fighting with your ergonomics is not a good environment for learning something new from scratch. |

Re: First Flight
I very nearly found out what happens if you fly into the side of one of the gates while cruising and typing in the chat box. I assumed last night that I hit Enter, G and R fast enough...maybe I did just miss the edge of the ring and flew through it.
I assume bad things (like loosing your shiny new hand-me-down guns) happen if you cruise into solid objects. |

Re: First Flight
Nothing happens when you fly into solid objects.
But the G and R is the best way to get through that ring, unless you like the pain of rebooting the game after every jump. Just remember that this game is still in Beta, and although there is talk of going GOLD in the new few months, I don't think they realize just how far they really are from GOLD, but they are learning fast. |

Re: First Flight
If you should fly through the center of the gate and come out the other side to find everything is invisible, use 'v' to target the gate you just came through and fly around watching the distance in the lower right corner to get close enough to hit 'r'
At least, that's what I do because I don't like having to restart the game ![]() |
