GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

Day 1:

I did the whole download, register, install, thing without any difficulty and booted right in. Less problems than I expected. I did get a black screen with a cursor for a second, but apparently that was just lag from the client telling the server to send my character list.

Everything inside the station went as well as could be expected, and then I launched (dum dum dum....)

The controls were....well, the basic flight controls came naturally enough. WASD and all with QE (iirc) to roll. I did keep going to cruise speed (travel mode) accidentally while fumbling around the keyboard to try and accomplish other tasks of which I was unsure which buttons needed to be pressed....but nothing traumatic.

The first mission I was assigned was called "Stroll" and was to fly through some waypoints and then return to station. Of course, the trouble began when I saw a ring in space to the right of my first waypoint. It looked like a beacon to me and so my jumpgate instincts took over and I went to fly through it.

It wasn't a beacon though. I was a gate to Terra...and I was at Lua prior to that, so I guess you could call it the Lua-Terra gate. The Terra place was kind of weird. It seemed like we were in extreme low orbit or something. It felt a little starfoxy. So, to get back all I had to do was find the Terra-Lua gate, but that wasn't as easy as you would think.

I apparently had fallen victim to a strange bug. I couldn't see any of the standard stuff you could see, but I could see ships. The gate itself was completely invisible to me. It took a painful amount of time to figure out that was what was happening.

At this point, there is no little green arrow. The radar is overlayed over your entire screen and consists of 1 good sized circle. Anything you see that's on the circle is actually behind or beside you....unless it's at that point in front of you. You can cycle through targets with tab and shift tab, or you can press V to get a list of everything targetable within the sector. If you're chasing Rollio and you don't know if he roided or jumped out, I'm thinking you could press 'v' and find out if he was still in sector.

So, after hurricane mentioned relogging, I relogged and could see the gate again. So I hopped through to Lua. On the other side, things went not-pretty. I'm guessing it was a server-me lag issue or something, but I went down to about 2 fps and had a pretty unpleasant experience....so I tried relogging again.

That seemed to help a little bit, so I headed back to the station I started at (Selene) and just as I was about to dock the server went to bed for the night. Le sigh.

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

Taikodom looks to have a great future ahead of it IMHO. I like the AI interaction, the graphics are a little rough but I am on an older PC and I cant have everything turned up the way it needs to be.

I already see a community developing which is good. People like BORG, Cowboy, and Tsrike have been ver generous to me.

But to be honest im having a hard time figuring out whats going on. One of the things that gets me sucked into a game is its community and knowing whats going on. For the most part everyone is speaking a foreign language and I simply cant translate it. I feel somewhat lost.

Damn I should have taken more language classes..

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

Well, as more US type people give it a shot, you'll see more familiar text scrolling by. It seems like a nice game, and I'll continue hopping on. I'm going to get the drivers for my wireless card from this comp installed on the taikodom comp, since this card is more reliable than the cheapo belkin I got a couple months ago for my laptop (which is a totally seperate computer itself). If that fails, heck, I've been wanting to reinstall xp on this other desktop since i got it handed down to me from my dad. (I have to take hand me downs).

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

Day 2:

I had a lot of problems with Terra today, and then I changed something that I was doing and they all went away. I'm not sure if it was a bug and I found a workaround, or if the server just got better. Anyway, I had gotten into the habit of pointing at a gate and using cruise speed. When I hit the middle of the gate I'd get the load screen and seemingly pop into the next node just fine, but then as soon as I targeted something I'd drop down to 1-2 fps. I switched to coming out of cruise mode before the gate and using 'r' to interact with it instead of flying through the center, and the fps thing quit happening.

I did my first mining missions today, and when I read the NPC text it kind of sounded like there were other ways to mine. He said something like 'since you can't extract, just blow up the roids' so it made me think maybe there's another way to do it.

I've seen 3 types of ships so far, though I'm still stuck in the bullfrog financially. Fighters, explorers, and freighters. I plan on checking out the explorers when I can.

I did my first combat with drones and PvP today. I wasn't particularly impressed. Outside of cruise mode, where my ship goes about 500 and I can't steer it quickly, my ship goes about 110...unless I turn, in which case my speed drops to about 55. If I don't smoothly get behind something I'll run into it. Since collisions are on we then bounce off each other, and then for the rest of the fight it's pretty much bouncing back and forth toe-to-toe.

I got some 'significant PvE content in unreg' when they gave me a mission to go rip an NPC named Harry Thomason in the Venus sector. Low and behold some dude named Gilgamesh (apparently from the same corporation at Jump and Tstrike) in a big red ship decided to wax me for no apparent reason whilst I was fighting Harry Thomason. It kinda blew because I had a cargohold full of crap to sell at Eden. I was cloned at the station I had last docked at.

Interestingly, my guns weren't destroyed...or it automatically rebought them or something. I had upgraded to a different gun than the basic free one, and after my ship went boom my next clone's ship had the same gun.

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

The Server was much better yesterday.

Cruise is supposed to not allow you to steer cleanly.

Unreg is dangerous.

Dont know if you want to join our corp or not but if you do, PM me we need to talk.

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

I agree that the server was better yesterday, but I did loose sound a few times, and Terra is just a crap shoot as to rather your gonna need to rebot when entering or not.

Grimgriz may be onto something with don't Cruise through the gates. I've also noticed better results with I turn cruise off and use "r" to jump.

I haven't had any problem in Unreg yet, but then I always hit hitting the "v" button and checking distances between me and possible bad guys with my hand ready to nail the "g" for cruise if I see the badguys trying to sneak up on me.

I lost a ship to a drone fight early on. It was my explorer with upgraded gun and cargo expansion mod, and when I arrived back at my last station nothing changed. It almost seems like death in this game is painless.

I time my cruises to stop just before the gate and then jump.... Yes staying alert in Unreg is key... those Orange squares on your HUD indicate potential bad guys..... when I see an orange box I check my targets....

Remember Cruise takes 5 secs to activate 10 secs to cool down.... I think in Gold death will be meaningful. The code for Terra is terrible I hear... I always lag in Terra so now I hang out in Ceres (which is the hub of the TKD universe)

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

Day 3:

Though I originally forgot this, I had snatched a mission to take 100 silicate to europa from the Julio Verne station lady. She said if I needed better gear to head over to the Themis station and talk to somebody there. Against my better judgement I did, and she gave me a timed mission to kill some bots for about 2k. I actually got my ship damaged doing it so I got to play with the repair option.

I haven't gotten far enough in the game to make any definite conclusions/suggestions yet...but everything I've experienced so far could be done in Jumpgate Classic with 4 sectors, 8 POS, and the player-made missions I never convinced them to implement....but I digress.

While I was screwing around at those stations in the terra node, I started doing that ship information stuff, so I headed to Lua to see what ships were there. While I was there I talked to the agents and he gave me a mission to bring him 10 rogue AIs. Well, it wasn't a mission so much as he said he'd buy them if I got 10. It didn't show up in the mission list or anything. It was about that time when I was reminded how much I hate drop-quests/missions.

I started blasting drones in Lua and enjoying the new hud...I don't recall the reticule lighting up when it was a good time to shoot before, and sorting through the loot. Of course, since the loot has random contents while I only wanted 10 Rogue AIs, I got some guns, a lot of ammo, some coolant maybe, 4 Rogue AIs, 12 AI upgrades. Hell, I'm not sure but it felt like I was grinding away. I guess I killed somewhere between 20 and 40 drones..and still only got the 4 Rogue AIs. About that time my little bullfrogs cargo was full.

I dumped everything in my cargo into storage at Selene (it's very nice they let you have storage at multiple stations..and no small amount from what I can tell) and headed back out to try to get some more Rogue AIs. After another 5 drones and no rogue AI drops, I said screw it and docked back at Selene. I threw the Rogue AIs into storage and decided to get rid of my crap. I was pretty frustrated at the lack of progress I had made financially...until I got to Eden and sold my crap. The little guns the drones kept dropping were worth about 1700 a piece, and the upgrade AIs were worth 300 a piece. I guess the whole adventure made me about 20k, and I didn't even get the stuff to sell that I wanted to.

I headed back to Selene and bought me a Sherah for the cargo space, and then gathered the silicates. Compared to the rogue AIs it went super fast. I hauled tail to europa, practicing v-targeting and hitting cruise speed as fast as I could. I turned in the silicates and took the chemical mission, then flew to eden. Of course....i didn't check to see that they put the chemicals in my cargo and apparently didn't...so I'll be flying back to pick them up at Europa later it would seem.

I'm really interested in grinding enough cash to start pvping. I think it will be a good example of how the new travel-mode thing is going to work in Jumpgate Evolution... Should at least give a fair idea if the travel-mode is going to make pvp suck as bad as I think it will.

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

Grim they won't put the mission goods in if you don't have the room. They put it in your storage. Witch chems if you take 20 then that takes up 100 space. Chems are 5X

Re: GrimGriz's Taikodom Experience

This is why I suggest the Longfin ship as I know it has the cargo room to carry all 50 units. You can also get systems upgrade Cargo Expanders that help. First time I took that mission I had my Bullfrog and had to make 5 trips back and forth to get all the chemical to Eden so I could finally complete the
