viri, joysticks, and fun

So after stumbling upon this forum the other day, I read up a bit on TKD and it looks sort of interesting. I downloaded it, and the patch file located in the paragraph below the download button.
Quote:
IMPORTANT: you also need to install this patch in order to play Taikodom.
Download it, move the patch to root folder of your instalation and run it.
After that, click on 'Extract' button and finally 'Yes to All'.
When I opened the folder containing the patch (without even clicking on any file in the folder), AVG said it had Trojan horse BackDoor.Hupigon3.AMVL in it (in the patcher that is, not the main installer). Also, why would I need a patcher to get up to 0.9.2.370 when the big file I downloaded is 0.9.2.370?

I did a search for hupigon at the TKD forum (Portuguese anyone?) with no hits. Needless to say, I'm a tad gunshy about running the installer, and have no intention of running the patch. Someone say something to cool my nerves.

Issue #2: why are so many of you guys using/complaining about flying by mouse/kbd when I saw a thread where GG posted the joystick config. Did I overlook something?

Issue #3: I didn't see the word FUN anywhere on the following list:

I see that first paragraph every time I log into TKD on my login page, and I still haven't bothered with it. Game works great with just the launch and let upgrade by itself once you get past the "application must reset"

The game is fun, bet it is beta. I know I was spoiled by netdevil and there assume work on Jumpgate, so TKD is lacking in things that I loved about jumpgate, but makes up for some of that with things they have implemented that are enjoyable.

My AVG has never said anything, but I didn't download the patchthing it said I had to...because well, works out I didn't have to.

The Taikodom/Hoplon Management team is reviewing this report. Their developers are scramble to get their arms around the situation. I will inform the community when I get an update.

Re: viri, joysticks, and fun

Like so many other apps it could be a false positive. I never d/l that other file either since the game works without it. There are lots of false positives these days with the heuristics these AV programs use. Many determine based on behavior or similar signature and the file is fine. Just go to the AVG forums and you will see people reporting the darnedest things. Now if this game was made by Sony I would worry.

Zero I complain about it because my x45 doesn't seem to work anymore. And the x52 has twist so I haven't bought one.

Jump is right a false positive.

Re: viri, joysticks, and fun

but the fact is, you shouldn't need it.

I was complaining about the mouse back before I finally plugged in with the JS a couple weeks ago. I had heard people not liking the js, so i hadn't bothered til then. But, it's sooo much better (for me) with the js than the mouse.

And yes, it is fun. Not quite up to Jumpgate, (well graphics are better), but it's still fun, especially if you're bored of Jumpgate after 50981509815 years that you've been playing it.

Re: viri, joysticks, and fun

Yep, false positive (I uploaded the file to kaspersky.com) and it only shows up as a virus on my laptop, not my desktop (both have AVG).

Down on twisting, eh? For me, twist was like a wheel mouse. I didn't see the attraction until I got one, and thereafter couldn't go without it. But to each his own...I saw somewhere else that people flew with sticks in their lap instead of on a solid surface (keyboard tray for me). I haven't done that since I flew X-Wing on a 386 with a friend running the keyboard as my droid.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

One more dumb question...my RL sched now fits best with games I can save/exit fairly quickly and play in 15 min stints. JGClassic really wasn't well suited to this kind of play. I always felt if I didn't have an hour, it wasn't worth logging on. Can someone comment on how TDK would fit? Obviously I don't expect to "save" in space or anything, but how far away are dock/log points and how much of a pain would it be to have to bail quickly?

Re: viri, joysticks, and fun

I have CT zero. Twist can really aggravate it. But then so does the mouse.

In this game you can haul a load to another star system in minutes or you can go kill some drones or some asshats in a few minutes if you wish.

Unless it's changed recently, you reappear exactly where you quit the game.
