I'm always a day late and a dollar short for everything ... i also have a tendency not to read old posts.... but this one looked interesting.........

I know i'm a n00b and stuff.... (joined Nov. 2003) and don't know most of you.... but i have this peeve about "leaving due to player numbers" ... granted... i didn't notice much of this in this post... and mind you ... i really haven't read to many of the older/other posts in these forums as i'm ultra uber n00b to this forum community.... anyway ... it'd be uber kewl if all the people that have ever yipped about player numbers to reacctivate and log on see if you all actually log on... then there will be the high player numbers that everyone craves catchy concept eh?

I had went TRI-classified as well for a bit... but see i had to muster up the energy to talk to my ex/bf to get the credit card info.....which i might add is REALLY lame that you must have the last 4 digits of your credit card to acctivate...... but anyway my break was from August - December........ and since i've been back and paying attention i don't see many of you "pledging to reactivate guys"....... i wave to Romulus quite often and Kermy pops on.... and Jump as well......... Darky had... and i sucked him into my squad ... reapply you g00b...but he's lazy and doesn't log in either..................hmmmmm GET IN THE GAME PEOPLE!


Istvan made really awesome changes for the n00bs in the past post... reset try it over... join my squad! Need a change of pace... join my squad and help n00b players get into the game ... teach them your tricks! ... Let's get Jumpgate back and pumping again!

Rofl... i'm really not trying to hyp my squad......... all i'm saying is.... sure this might not be like the old days.... but you know what it's still a great game with great people... and a lot of those salty dogs from beta....remember the olden days...but take time to make some new memories......i log onto the game if there's 5 people online or 500 people online........ if you think you're bored... f4 me and i'll entertain you or i'll hop onto a ts server to make your flight time more enjoyable (i'm a girl .. i like to talk ... lol )

Well, since I signed up again. I've seen half the people in this thread leave or just fade away. The flamefests continue on JOSSH and elsewhere. Former authors of posts about sticking with Jumpgate to the end, that have not done so, return to lure people away. And former players have websites where they just sit and bash Jumpgate.

The game itself keeps getting better and better, thanks to Istvan. Yet it's community continues to self destruct.

So, after two years, now what?

I think why ppl bash Jumpgate is because the game gets to them. Like no other game, this one is sometimes on personal level. And that can create negative emotions like no other game.

While the game keeps better and better, reputation stays the same (for the most part at least).

I really do hope ND will make Jumpgate 2. IF not, too bad. Such a great game.......

I tell ya - shiny graphics update + complete server wipe + commercial during battlestar galactica.

At this point, the only other option imo is to add real AI (not to be confused with bad conflux AI). There's something about logging in and flying around and not seeing anyone that makes you not want to log in.

I've found most gamers care about gameplay over graphics. Wiping the server would lose a lot of vets. Wonder what a commercial costs?

I've yet to see a flying game yet where the AI acts like anything other than flying targets instead of someone actually trying to kill you. As much as I am sick to death of flux AI, at least they do actually try to shoot you and don't just fly around as targets (with their fixation targeting). Now that flux do miss, they just need to stop auto-dodging at 70s or less and they'd be a real challenge.

There's something about logging in and flying around and not seeing anyone that makes you not want to log in.

That's the primary reason I log in almost every night. I want to provide others with at least 1 HG wingman if they're looking at logging in as a Quant. When I'm alone which is often, I'll tune beacs which is also a sign of the state of decay from which we suffer. Then I'll usually beac into enemy territory to draw them out into a fight at least once, even in bad odds (though since the alliance, DE/OEC have been coming down to Quantar more often before I can get up there).

Point is that the "who's logged in" screen perpetuates a downward spiral unless a few people are willing to log in first and simply be there to encourage others to log in when they check the online numbers.

Server wipe would destroy Jumpgate. This may have been possible a year or so ago -- but not now.

I feel like a broken record, but it's all about player numbers. The reason people get so incensed about things is, to some extent, because everyone know everyone else (including their second and third accounts) -- so you get small-town syndrome going on.

If there were hundreds or people flying regularly, everyone would NOT know everyone so intimately, so getting ripped, stripped or whatever would not be taken so personally.

Unfortunately there will never be a JG2. I've asked about it a few times and apparently because for a sequel to do well, generally the original had to be really good and well known. Jumpgate clearly doesn't fall into that category.

ND has said that in the future however, they may make another space sim like Jumpgate. That's probably the best we can hope for (or some publisher taking interest in Jumpgate in it's current state and funding ND to keep it going/growing... yea like that'd happen).

Jumpgate is eventually going to die. There isn't enough money coming into the game and there are more people leaving then signing up. I love the game, but unfortunately it wont last forever. I'm somewhat surprised it's even lasted this long. People say ND doesn't care, but I think they do. Most companies would've shut the game down a long time ago, ND keeps Jumpgate operating. Sure it would be nice if we could get more than one coder and a part-part-time graphics guy working on it, but it's better than nothing at all.

I just wish that Themis wasn't the only option for our community management or that ND would tell them to stop being total idiots. They've screwed this game up so many times it's not even funny. You gotta wonder how they hire people. It's as if they just find some guy on the streets and say "Hey, do you want a job? You wont need intelligence or common sense!"

Oh well, not much we can do except wait and hope that ND makes another space sim after AA launches.

Well spork, while your way is noble, it is not the way of the masses. They are not "willing to log in first and simply be there." They do care about petty things like graphics and such. And I'm not sure what veterans you are worried about lossing. They're all gone, for the most part.

I think an AI would be cool if it was just background. Such as ships moving from planets to stations, and visa versa. Also ships picking up ore from ore depot and taking them to Depot stations would be a great background effect.

TRI police would be cool too if not taken too far. Where the heck is the government forces? Always has seen odd. AI works if it's mostly asthetic and fills holes players can't or won't fill.

Basically, anyone can look at the who's online screen and know if it's worth loging in. Take it away, and logging in won't be any more fun.

We can find a zillion things to blame the demise of this game on. But in reallity, sometimes things just don't work out. And no matter what the mechanical reasons are, or Themis and ND's culpability, we the community must accept our own part in it's destruction.
