Just do it. That's what I am doing. I have no training, but I have desire and free time. I have an idea, and some people who share my vision. The odds of anything ever coming of it are slim, but it is a hobby at this point.

I had given much thought to trying to offer ND an alternative to Themis as well...but I don't have a clue how to persue that. I know I can manage the community, and I know I can run events and stories, but I don't know how well I can do all the other things. It is a difficult job.

I have to admit...I miss Jumpgate, at least to a point. I have made alot of friends out here. I keep kicking around making a return, but I just don't know if I can get back into it. I am playing WoW, kinda...but that is getting old. It is pretty and all, but I am getting tired of dying because I don't have the uberest equipment.

Such a conundrum.

WoW was made stupid with the Honor system IMO.

As for doing it, I would like to and maybe I could start something, but once I'm done school in a few weeks I'll probably be working a couple jobs. Not sure what my free time will be like... maybe, anything is better than doing nothing I guess

Well, I don't have time or skill to code a game. But I did learn how to code helps for this game in an effort to make it better. I guess I failed in that effort, but at least I tried. Few maybe use my tools or even care, but I'm satisfied that I have done what I could to make Jumpgate a better experience. Even if no one ever noticed or benefited from my efforts.

I'll agree with game play over graphics long term. However, when I'm looking into a new game the first thing I go on is premise (i.e. I tried city of heroes because I wanted to play a game where I was a super hero) and the second is looks. Gameplay will keep me, but people TRY games because they LOOK cool.
Yes, wiping the server would lose a lot of vets. However, I kind of think that some of the vets are part of the retention problem. I'll stand by my belief that MC farming ultimately was the key factor in the downfall of Jumpgate. It's neither here nor there now, but a wipe would fix what's left of that ill gotten gain.

I've yet to see a flying game yet where the AI acts like anything other than flying targets instead of someone actually trying to kill you. As much as I am sick to death of flux AI, at least they do actually try to shoot you and don't just fly around as targets (with their fixation targeting). Now that flux do miss, they just need to stop auto-dodging at 70s or less and they'd be a real challenge.
I was meaning more like Jump suggested. For example, no matter the player numbers, with mining as it stands I doubt there will ever be enough people doing it for their to be freighter loads of commods. Mining AI that actually mined/could be pirated/made commodities would give meaning to people like you patrolling faction space and for others that clear the flux. It almost hurts me to say it, because my favorite part about Jumpgate has always been that every ship you see has a real person in it. However, it's gotten to the point that I think seeing an AI ship is better than seeing no one.

Themis could go too afaic.

MC farming was ONE of the key factors in JGs downfall. MC farming alone couldn't be the key factor.

You wipe the game and you lose a bunch of vets, what's left? No money. How do you get new players with no money to advertise? I mean, we're just barely advertising now...

I believe the topic at hand is, "now what", not "what then."

Now what? Log in. All you people who troll the various Jumpgate forums. Just log in and play. We're still having fun most of the time, even with small numbers. The downward spiral can only be turned up if people log in. Noobs can only learn to love the game from vets who log in. And if you no longer enjoy the game, then frankly, buzz off.

Sadly there won't be another game like Jumpgate because everyone wants to add a lot of aspects to a sci-fi related games where space flight is less likley.
