Either I couldn't find a good old screenshot to compare it to, or there weren't really stars much back in the day.

No there weren't ever many stars. Here's one from blue space. I'm really impressed with the new algorithm. It looks more like what I'd want to see when making one.
By the way thanks for posting a shot of them I'd been looking forward to see what it looks like.

Oh I'll be rejoining soon enough. I got a raise at work to the tune of an extra $50 a week so I can actually afford to play again. But I'm gonna wait probably until the end of January because I'll be getting an Xbox+Halo2 and I expect my attention to that will be undivided for the first few weeks.

Can you reduce the size of those a bit? They are stretching the forum too much bud. Looks good though.

You really can't appreciate the effect in a static pic. The really cool thing (IMO) is when you're flying along and view a static structure against the starry background -- it makes things seem much more "3D" to me.

Yah -- when I first saw it on the test server, I was very impressed. It adds much more interest to the "sky" and the effect when there is a close object with the dense starfield behind it, it gives space much more depth.

Even in a static pic that is FREAKING BEAUTIFUL. One of my biggest graphical complaints about Jumpgate was that it suffered from "nebula syndrome", and this fixes that a lot.
