Heres the catch.
It costs a few hundred dollars to get Jumpgate to run in Mac or Linux. Unless something new is discovered that is free to do that. |

There have been several attempts to play Jumpgate on other systems than Windows. I did investigate a bit over how to do it in linux once or twice, with no that good final results. The main problem was at the time I tried the non availability of functional DirectPlay implementation in the available DirectX emulators. It is highly possible that mac users do not have this problem (specially with the new intel macs).
If DirectPlay is implemented (more or less legaly) in linux emulators is not clear, for research go to: Wine HQ TransGaming Inc. The second is actually not free software so it is possible they got it by now. (last time I checked they didn't) (btw, if anyone found a solution, pm me ) |

I did the research jig about a year ago when I switched my primary machine to Linux. I was totally out of luck since I was not only running a non-Windows OS but also a 64bit version connected to an hdtv, which means that unless someone is working in secret on a widescreen 64-bit version of Jumpgate, then that will never happen. To make matters worse, my X52 has minimal Linux support. Previously I would have been tempted to work on some drivers for it myself, but I just don't have time for stuff like that any more.
My alternative is my MacBook, but, unless I bite the bullet and buy myself a copy of Windows to dual boot on that (which I won't), I am going to continue to be Jumpgateless. Not updating the hardware requirements for the game certainly has its disadvantages - we've always seen problems with non-Windows OSes, but now we're seeing Vista compatilibility issues as well. |

From what I read about wine (Wine HQ) its all about just trying the different versions and see how Jumpgate interacts with it (at least a mouse/keyb if joystick dont work).
Right now, EVE works on Linux via wine and the same applies for many games like Unreal Tournament and others, which arent Linux native apps but rather wine'd games. From what I read so far... some games have issues and some run perfectly well. Its a matter of trial and error and developing a how-to methodology whenever somebody gets it working. BTW, wine has a retail version.... and they say it works with some games, but they can't guarantee that the ones that dont show on their list will, so I'd avoid that option. I'll check the Transgaming too, see what its all about. ELP |
