Thanks.

In almost all current games, you can override the standard resolutions provided in the options for the game and specify the size of this "window" and, in some cases, the field of view.

Just take a look at all the games that were never created to support widescreen resolutions out of the box but have ways of obtaining various custom widescreen resolutions at http://www.widescreengamingforum.com . So far, Jumpgate is the only game I have played that's not on that website.

Judging by the looks of the file structure, the resolution options are either hardcoded into the game with no way of overriding them or they are in the binary video.bin file which pretty much rules out editing that file to add the custom resolution. The only other possible option would be a command line parameter which would require the game executable be coded to accept the parameter.

All technical aspects aside, since we know the realities of Jumpgate and code changes, would something like this be an unfair advantage? Sounds like it would be cool, but does it belong in a PVP type game. Seems to me that being able to have a wider screen while most don't would be an advantage. I don't know much about Jumpgate PVP is why I ask.

I don't think it'd be any more of an advantage than say a 19" monitor vs a 17" monitor.

Assuming that different resolutions yield different fields-of-vision, then yes, it could be an advantage. But I think most competent PvPers have their hat switches set to display side view, rear view, top view, etc., and I would think that those views would mostly nullify an advantage that a larger field of vision might give.

I wouldn't rank it as a "big deal".

I don't even have all my views set up on my hat anymore. It gets targetting, to avoid killing the same old targetting buttons on FF2 #1.

Interesting, I would have thought that seeing more to the right and left without toggling would be a slight advantage.

I couldn't imagine it helping. All the pvp that matters occurs with an inch or 2 of the crosshairs. The rest of pvp occurs on the radar screen (which I am not good at). Being not good at radar use, I use distance and position of the target box to guestimate. So for me, a wider monitor that is not also taller might even be a disadvantage.

Widescreens are really only great for one thing when it comes to games, and that's RTS. As far as I know, RTS been designed for widescreens since early 1990.

How to leave the Planet:

1. Phone NASA. Their phone number is (731) 483-3111. Explain that it's very important that you get away as soon as possible.

2. If they do not cooperate, phone any friend you may have in the White House - (202) 456-1414 - to have a word on your behalf with the guys at NASA.

3. If you don't have any friends at the White House, phone the Kremlin (ask the overseas operator for 0107-095-295-9051). They don't have any friends there either (at least, none to speak of), but they do seem to have a little influence, so you may as well try.

4. If that also fails, phone the Pope for guidance. His telephone number is 011-39-6-6982, and I gather his switchboard is infailible.

5. If all these attempts fail, flag down a passing flying saucer and explain that it's vitally important you get away before your phone bill arrives.

Bleh . . . NOTHING helps!

The other night, I logged on in the middle of a melee. My Quantar friends suggested that I "log on to TS if I did not want to die." I assumed this was some new invulnerability hack, so I jumped right on TS.

They LIED!
