Jumpgate lag making PvP unplayable
In the recent weeks it has become increasingly apparent that more than 30 pilots online causes PvP to be unplayably laggy.
Can ALL pilots who are currently experiencing increased lag post here to prove to netdevil that they have a problem and it is not just all of our connections from around the US, EU or the world. I play from the uk and usually have a ping of around 150, I have played for almost a year and have never experienced lag this bad before. Please sort it out because its no fun flying in a lag fest and makes me not want to play Jumpgate at all. |

Re: Jumpgate lag causing PvP unplayable
Just as an FYI, playing from across the pond has always been an issue when it comes to lag in Jumpgate, over the past year it would've been virtually unnoticable due to the low player count, but back in the day when numbers were high (read: beta) and there were lots of people playing from overseas, it became very pronounced. But that's not a ping rate problem, it's a bandwidth problem. I don't know if there's a viable solution for Jumpgate, but Jumpgate Evolution could be a Godsend in the form of more streamlined code to reduce or eliminate the lag spikes.

Re: Jumpgate lag causing PvP unplayable
Something to check when you start to have big lag problems is to run a trace route to see if there is something causing the lag between you and ND. I have noticed lag, but my ping stays pretty good (<40)

Re: Jumpgate lag causing PvP unplayable
The game is quite frankly a joke and unplayable atm due to the lag. If NetDevil are going to do nothing I would prefer they let us know, but then again they happily take our money and keep us in the dark like any business with zero updates.
With respect to those not playing right now, your comments are not really helping those that do. For the coment above about beta, think back all those years and remember that the majority were on dial up. Then think about what you said again, and why I make this comment. If NetDevil really wants Jumpgate Evolution to be a success. having their current game completely unplayable is not a very good marketing ploy for existing, returning, or new players. Regards Al |

Re: Jumpgate lag causing PvP unplayable
You know, if I was building a new apartment complex for my tennants to live in, I'm certain that fixing the pipes in the old building wouldn't be very high on my list of priorities. That's purely from a business perspective though, which is exactly what the MMO market is, a business. Just like the landlord that takes your rent, the developer of an MMO doesn't owe you any favors.

If you are having problems, where are you located (i.e. where do you live?)? Is this problem happening to the majority of EU players or is this widespread and including US players as well? Please include details on your connection type...and if you say satellite I am going to drop a swarm on you. Trace routes would really help too...that way you might see the problem is something between you and the game servers. Believe me, if the problem is on our end, we will take steps to resolve the issue ASAP. Thoth I have a feeling that the latency issue stems from two definitely items of note since the architecture of Jumpgate is the classic client/server environment versus the Composite Application (which Jumpgate is kinda is). With the various missile objects floating around, the end client system must process the placement of said objects. If those animations have not be used or updated over a period of time, lag can and will occur until the objects (missile object) are used more often enough to be cached by DirectX. I firmly believe this is what has caused the end user latency issue. I noted (by hand) my latency during the furball in Morain Harbor and in Greater Locks. Greater Locks is a VERY busy sector due to the ENORMOUS flux spawn, POSs, asteriods, ships, and ordinance used in combat. As combat develops, pilots will skip about the screen as the client system tries to process that information. I cannot speak for everyone but my ping never increased, but I leave the developer staff with the following numbers I collected from my monitoring solution I sell my customers: CPU Utilization 8% before combat 14% during combat in Morain Harbor CPU Utilization 8% before combat, 18% in Greater Locks while cleaning up flux with 8 ships, 33% in Greater Locks during combat My memory utilization tends to go up as well but retracts when I jump sectors. I would ask everyone to double check their DirectX version and their .NET Framework versions since Jumpgate is not Java dependence. Now what I have experienced is that pilots do jump across the screen but that DECREASED from the first major battle of recent weeks. This supports my theory I outlined earlier in this post. Been back for a couple of weeks now, and have no latency issues at all.
I am of course in the good ol' USA. |

I say fix the old pipes. Let your tenants be able to have flowing water. There are laws against landlords like you. And yes I get fight lag too, ping normal, jumping normal, but during a furball its nonsense. |

Re: Jumpgate lag making PvP unplayable
Afaik the quants are having problems, they have guys from both sides of the pond. The Octs are having probs, we have guys from both sides of the pond. The sols are having probs, they have guys from both sides of the pond.
There are/have been several occasions when we have no experienced the lag over the last few weeks, although it is getting so commonplace that lag is now becoming the norm in any sort of larger scale fight(10-20 fighting). I would like to see everyone post on Jossh with their traceroutes as it would undoubtably be harder to ignore then, and more importantly establish the problem, and ultimately fix it if there is one. I would post mine here to be copied on Jossh but I don't particulary want anyone getting hassle on my behalf. Regards Al |
