Eventually, all good things come to an end. For me, the good times pretty much ended with the EEA. I'd been through some bad times in Jumpgate history already by this point (anyone remember the OV-Death days?), but the EEA put an end to being able to just fly around with DSA and have fun. Not only did we have to fly with other solrain squads to be anywhere near close to even numbers, but also at that time the f3 and f4 banter took a nose dive.
The roughest part was having to team up with other Solrain squads. We had developed into a tight team that knew how to play off each other and work well together. When TTelephone and friends were in your combat group, you never knew what to expect. For the most part, voice comms stayed in squad, and I have reason to believe the EEA had their own which gave them another advantage beyond numbers. It's not that united comms were never tried, but in the end, everyone wanted to be on voice with friends and not friends and strangers. That comes from voice comm ettiquette (some don't know how to use a push to talk button) and some comes from not being able to talk about what you normally talk about and do on private comms. Not everyone can appreciate Lovemonk's singing after all.
Most in DSA were anti-matter farming for quite a long time. I always was. An exploit is an exploit whether the devs realize/say anything/refuse to fix it or not. After all, I was one of the good guys. If only they had piracy gear minus traps during the MC farming days.... Going up against farmers was generally an uphill battle, especially if you did it in a fighter. Not only could the farmers afford to hire thugs to rip you while they farmed, but you'd also lose your insurance. A few among us started dumping MCs on farms before they were done cooking. It was profitable, pissed off the farmers, and you didn't have to carry a bounty. The IC reason to dump on farms was simple - too often it was octs and quants and sols all together manipulating the economy...in Sol space. It's one thing for Sols to do it, but we couldn't exactly sit idly by and watch Quants and Octs take advantage of Solrain economy.
Fighting an uphill battle all the time got rather frustrating. Then, one afternoon I was in Wake by myself in my Tensity. I don't recall for certain which phoon pilot showed up, though I believe it was Dice_Bar. While fighting (and losing) with him, I noticed that I really wasn't flying around all that much. At the time, it seemed the Tensity wasn't best suited to my sit-there and pull the trigger fighting style. On an impulse, I switched to the Octavian faction, where I thought sitting still and firing away might actually work.
