This thread got me thinking.
Since I'm recently playing with Virtual PC, maybe there is a way to play Jumpgate on other systems than Windows. VMWare got this free program called VMware Player. You could run a VMware player on other systems with virtual Microsoft Os. Problems:dunno how good (or bad) would Jumpgate perform, you need precreated virual machine for VMware Players (VM Player doesn't allow you to create virtual machines) and we would need some kind of Windows OS. Possible solution: Someone could create and host pre-created virtual machine so that ppl could download it. But that might have some legal issues. ![]() |

Ok I did some research.
VM Player doesn't have the option to install VMware Tools which in needed to enable 3d3 support for virtual OS and 3D3 is needed for Jumpgate. I did find a possible way to enable 3d3 support for VMware Workstation. Since VM Player is only beta, maybe that option will be aviable in the future. |

As far as I knew, historical attempts to make Jumpgate run under wine met with failure. wine, or one of its many incarnations, may be able to run it now but I don't have a 32bit system to try it on any more.
If VMware works any differently compared to wine, it may give different results. |

After doing more research, I was kinda able to run it. Kinda. However, screen was black and it was stalling my CPU. (umm stalling was fixed a little bit by adding more memory to the virtual video card)
I hear the game, I can alt tab back to windows but I cannot see anything while being in the game besides a black screen. So I guess most likely, a very powerfull computer might be able to run it. Mine is only AMD 1.8 GHz and 512 DDR. *edited for updates |

Why would you want to go to all that trouble when even the cheapest of the Windows PC machines out there will run Jumpgate just fine? Is it just the challenge of making bricks without straw?
