NASA manned Mars mission details emerge



Basically it looks like NASA is starting to release its plans for the first trip to Mars. They will build a ship in space, and travel will take 7 months, and then they will stay there for over a year before coming back.

I realize that we have a lot of problems here on earth that really need to be taken care of, but I just don't understand why we have left this vast playground of the stars untouched. There is so much about life and science that we can learn out there that is just waiting to be discovered.

We came so far during such a short time during our race to the moon. We created so much that we still use today (outside of tang and freeze dried ice cream). There is just so much untapped potential. I hope they actually get the funding for this, and this dream becomes a reality.

Well sadly, unless something is done about our war spending, we won't have a nation because we will be so far in debt that the rest of the world will "own" us....especially China.

@SpiritOne You forgot space sticks. Those fell off the radar too. Mmmmm, I still remember that nasty taste.

But yes, it is a shame. So many of the problems we have could be solved by the technology we would create by going there and sustaining a colony.

While this might happen once, not in 24 years, and without me. Couldn't think of eating crap during 2 years, beeing with multiple persons on one square inch and not beeing able to... you know, "see a girl".

I think they should send couples, its just wrong to take someone from their sig other for that long. Get 2 or 3 couples and send em there to start a new super race

I think you may see humans on Mars, but I think we're going to have to realize some sort of goal/profit to do it. I mean why send someone there just to say we did it? Of course, if there's a way we can get a colony set up in advance and then populate it for research purposes that will potentially lead to making money off of the products of that research....Then I think it will happen.
