The Hunt of the Red Router

Ok Ok, just making fun.... but seriously, Im in the hunt of a router to connect to a cable modem. Being that in the past we've had troubles with Linksys... Im wondering and pondering which would be a better recommendation.

Id like to get a Router for $50ish... I hear Netgear is da bomb, or was, not sure, but Im open to suggestions. I dont have the cable service yet, but we're evaluating seriously moving to.

Get one that works with the following:
Hack Attack: Turn your $60 router into a $600 router

Then get to hacking.

Personally I'm using an Airport Extreme BaseStation and I love it.

Re: The Hunt of the Red Router

Hm, I also have a WRT54G. It used to really piss me off that I couldn't connect to Jumpgate with 2 computers. Wish I had known you could hack it back when I cared about such things.

I'm betting that Jumpgate Evolution will have better/different netcode, but if not, I'll certainly give that Linux firmware update a try. Thanks!

Re: The Hunt of the Red Router

I get old compaq deskpro's from a local liquidation place for $35. Toss in a second NIC and load IPCop. The flexibility that gives is second only to enterprise solutions. I have had no problem running with DSL, Verion's FiOS and now TWC Cable.

Re: The Hunt of the Red Router

Here ya go bud a nice linux based router Amazon.com: Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL Wireless-G...Amazon.com: Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL Wireless-G...

These have all the flash and memory of the old 54G and they are hackable to do many things. only $59 and if you get the rebate $10 less than that. If you buy some other lynksis device and get it up to $100 you get another $20 back instantly. I just did this and it's pretty cool deal. Don't forget to check the free shipping.

What would reading your post have anything to do with my post? Are you that uber?

The one I posted is the 54GL
