My roommate and I were arguing the definition of an intellectual so I came here to see what you guys could come up with. So basically I'm asking a simple question: What is an intellectual?

Someone who's main thought processes are geared towards loftier things than the daily mundane tasks to fulfill the need for food and shelter.

I don't know, basically because I don't know any real intellectuals. What I do know is there are a lot of pseudo intellectuals, and I am one one myself,I can use the word boudatious in a conversation and people nod at me meaningfully, even though the word has no real meaning at all!

Its all about how you say stuff, do it with conviction and appear confident and people will not allow themselves to argue, just because they may seem ignorant. Its a really fun thing to do.

Or maybe I'm just a sad individual.

well.. it used to be that language was an objective thing.. a term carried a meaning because it was defined as such.

Granted, it's waaaay easier to just make up your own meaning, and then wonder why people don't understand each other.

Is it more intellectual to be too lazy to use reference material?
