I thought this was pretty cool. Anytime you can make medical costs come down it's a good thing.

Soon, without a lot of increased costs, radiologists will be able to use these 10-bit display systems to screen for breast cancer more efficiently and with greater confidence.

Interesting article, but I wonder if Radiologists will like it. Radiologists can get extremely set in their ways in how they like to view images, in fact they have been the largest road block to true 3d imaging in diagnostic imaging.

Our technology is advancing so fast right now in the medical field, 6 years ago our best CT scanner was a single slice (meaning it takes 1 image for every revolution) and its fasted speed was .7 (meaning 1 revalution took .7 seconds). Now, the latest and greatest is the VCT 64 slice, 64 images in one rotation, and it rotates at .3. We can do a full cardiogram in under 4 seconds and get no motion from the heartbeat.

The point is, its getting to the point where the next major breakthrough really needs to be in how we perceive the image we are taking, in all mediums not just CT, MRI or mammography. The ability to have more than just 256 shades of gray is a step, although quite the baby step. I know the egg heads up at GE Healthcare corporate are working on some major stuff though. Again, it goes back to, will the Radiologists accept it? If they don't like it, the product will never work.
