Then I can order the phone and internet with self install, then drop the TV. They offered to drop the install fee but I still don't like some clown coming in and messing with my equipment. I also don't like them coming in and seeing all my stuff including computer gear. It's like letting people in to scope out possible robberies. |

Re: Jump is on the blink
I'm with you on the "letting people into my house" thing Jump, and I'll take your word on the DirectTV is better than Cable (I've never had it, but I'm considering switching if I can find a cheaper package with them that has all of the channels I like), but I'm only paying $42.95 per month for my cable internet, and it is stable, and very fast. Of course, if I switch to DirectTV, I'll have to consider DSL since I could bundle them with our local phone company (who charges way too much for basic phone service ($43 per month if you want Caller ID)). The other option is to drop our phone service with them and get it through Comcast as a bundle that will save us money for a year before jumping to some astronomically high amount...and I threaten to cancel

Re: Jump is on the blink
I think you are thinking of Dish Network with is owned by AT&T and can be bundled. DirectTV is independent. 10 years now and we have had no outages. Plus reports are coming out that Comcast is downgrading HD channels so they can squeeze more in to compete with DTV. Which is not cool at all.

Re: Jump is on the blink
Yep, you're right! I just checked our phone company's website and it is Dish. If you were trying to sell someone on Direct TV, what would you tell them...other than the things you've already named.
So far we've established: 1) Better quality HD? 2) Less outages (I've only had my cable go out on me once in 5 years, and it was just for a few hours after someone actually took out a pole with their car). 3) Cheaper? I'll give you a run down of the things I like about Comcast TV for comparison: 1) HD-DVR (I'm sure this is available through DirectTV) 2) On Demand (lots of content available any time, starting to be a decent amount of HD movies, shows, and music as well) Majority is free. Can fast forward, pause, rewind, and save progress for later. 3) Discovery HD (I love these channels, and I love HD) 4) Having Cable TV lowers my internet bill ![]() Normal Bill for: HD-DVR box, Digital cable box, Digital Cable package with Encore movie package and HD programming, High Speed Internet (somewhere between 4mbps and 16mbps download according to the fine print, and 384-768 kbps upload)=$140 after all taxes and fees, no promotions active at the moment, though as I've said, I'm not planning on leaving it like this for long. |

Re: Jump is on the blink
That is not much upload for so high a download. It takes upward packets to generate downward content.
I guess it's just a matter of choice. Cable is maxed out on channels whereas DTV can add channels. I had so much downtime and other crap with cable that I never had with DTV. But, I also need adequate internet. Especially with 3 teenagers on wifi. They're taking all my b/w. ![]() |

Re: Jump is on the blink
Jump just hook up the TV to the wall yourself, they take the blocker off outside, done.
For internet, he will install the modem, but you can "test" the connection yourself. Just hook modem up to PC to prove it works, do a speedtest and let him go, then hook up your router, etc. Its not that bad....even when the installers are tards |
