The life of a tinkerer can be rough some times.
Sitting here bored on disability leaves me vulnerable to careless adventures. I had Vista 32 bit all tweaked and puring along nicely but I was a bit perturbed that I couldn't use all of my glorious 4 GB of high speed ram I had gotten such a good deal on. So after that ate at me for a bit I ventured over to the dark side. Despite all the travails I had read about, I stuck my Windows Anytime Upgrade Disk in that spiffy new DVD burner and rebooted. They put everything on that disk and you can order it for $5. If you have a 32 bit version installed you can convert to the 64 bit at no extra charge. Or you can use that disk to upgrade to a more feature rich version. Once you pay of course.
Anyway, it took three rounds to get the darn thing installed. I had an idea what the problem was but I wasn't going to surrender to that just because everyone else did. See, with Vista 64 bit you can use more that 3 GB of ram. However, just to make it fun, they have it so it will only install with 3 GB or less of Ram. Yeah I know, you hate Microsoft, I'm sure it was just some demented employee that has since been fired. Well, I would fire them anyway. $*$#! So I got it installed but 9 out of 10 reboots is a blue screen. And it crashed during windows update. So I crawled over to my case in surrender, removed the side, and took out 2 sticks of Ram. I could just feel all them geeks across the internet that posted about the need to do this staring me down. Surrender is not an easy thing to do. I went off in search of the infamous KB929777. And what do you know, my system no longer validates so I can't have the fix. Which is not included in Windows Update for some tortuous reason. So I rack my brain and cut off a few fingers till I remember the crash during windows update. I finish all that and finally have the goods. And now I can see and use all of that wonderful RAM. What I can't do yet is wrestle control of this system. Too much damn security. I guess when you install it and set yourself as administer that doesn't necessarily mean you are always administer. It's a real PITA but it should keep me happy tinkering with it for awhile trying to get control. I was able to restore all my Firefox data but I can't seem to restore my emails to Thunderbird. Windows won't even let me see the AppData directories. #!!%^*%! Anyway, fair warning to all others with the urge to have it all. ![]() |

Re: The life of a tinkerer can be rough some times.
And if it's that hard for someone of your caliber, how impossible must it be for dorks like me? Why the heck does it get more complicated? I had no problems with Basic or DOS, I could putter around in Win95 and could do somethings in Win98SE. XP? What? Don't even get me started on the "virtutes" of Vista (and I don't even have it installed on anything!).
I expect smart people to make things easier not more difficult. Guess we should hire a lazy man to do it (or woman... brains are NOT gender specific!). |

Well, the problem is that the average user thinks they are the only one that does anything on their computer. When in fact, programs are performing tasks all the time. So it's basically set up to keep you safe from poorly coded or malicious programs. The average user has absolutely no need for 64 bit Vista at this time. By the time they do it will be because all the programs they use will be designed for it and they won't have these issues.
Security is a good thing. |

Re: The life of a tinkerer can be rough some times.
If I can't play Jumpgate Classic on it, then the level of security is immaterial. I won't get a Vista-rated computer for that single reason. Heck, I may buy an old P4 (which as you know would be a serious step up) and install XP, or do what the grandson wishes and let him build me a gaming computer set up with XP.
Seriously, you are right Jump. Security is important mainly because of the "griefers" of RL who spend all their time writing "malware" just to mess with other folks "because they can TM". I can understand the actual criminals because they do what they do to make money. Still it IS irritating! |

Oh? I missed that part about Jumpgate Classic being redone for Vista. I still think I'll wait for that to actually happen before I plunk down hard earned cash for a new comp.

Of course, no one ever said you need to get rid of your old computer.
![]() It's not being redone for vista. But the new net code can be integrated into it to deal with the lag issue people have and it was mentioned that that would fix it for Vista users. Whether it would or not I have no idea. |
