User Interface of the Future...

Monday Inspiration: User Experience Of The Future | Design Showcase, Monday Inspiration | Smashing Magazine

Very interesting article on the types of technologies being put into practice these days.

Do you see any of these actually being used everyday?

I'm thinking maybe the 3d hologram, and most likely the multi touch systems. Bump top is cool, but I'm not so sure it will catch on.

Re: User Interface of the Future...

Well, back in the 50's and 60's they told everyone how they would soon be using video phones. Still not a reality though it is now finally available. The truth is, people just can't afford all that crap. There are a lot of great ideas out there but if it cost $20,000 who cares.

Re: User Interface of the Future...

Well today instead of video phones we have video conferencing, which if you are one of the lucky people to own a new(er) Mac, you can see just how awesome it is.

I was able to have a 3 way video chat and hear and see the people perfectly clear....much better than the ol days of 1 frame per 5 seconds like the first Instant Message clients had.

You didn't answer the question though Jump, of any of those technologies, which do you believe might become a reality?

Re: User Interface of the Future...

I did answer it. No one will be able to afford any of them. Especially when a cheaper older tech still gets the job done. Which is why there are no video phones sitting in every living room 50 years after it was first predicted it would be normal soon(tm).

Sorry, I am a realist. They want my money and will come up with cool ways to get it. Doesn't mean I will bite. They are neat ideas though.

Re: User Interface of the Future...

I dunno, MultiTouch looks like its being worked on by both sides of the fence...

Next step in Apple touch interface - multi-touch mouse
Microsoft R&D shows off multi-touch laptop - Engadget

There was rumors about Apple's next laptop having MultiTouch, but I don't think they are that close, I'm thinking maybe 2 more models before they unveal an all new multi-touch "tablet" like device. Think iPhone supersized.

Re: User Interface of the Future...

Well, this Cheoptics thing looks cool, though I fear the only use at current state is produce hovering coke bottles and other adverts in shopping malls. For games (or movies) they need to get the images completly solid looking and able to build up a whole scenery.

Multitouch is in use now (iphone), though I fail to see the breathtaking in that. I'm yet still waiting for a touchscreen (or monitor) that is easy to clean, doesn't shows any fingerprints at all, doesn't reflect any background and shows images as clear as a good TFT. Still, for most uses I don't like to tap around on the mainscreen anyway and saw yet no version with what I would like to replace my keyboard and mouse. Though some touchscreen on top of the keyboard, to extend the keyboard/mouse setup, would come handy in some games or programs (if supported by them).
