Thanks for the condolences and advice WB! Sadly, being 25 and these items being the first "nice" things I've ever owned, I had no insurance/serial numbers at all.

When I go search for my stuff next week (20 day holding grace period in AZ) I'll be calling the 20 shops in my 5mi radius (yeah, 20, wow) looking for the big ticket items before I drive over there. The only thing that I can really identify is my modified Rock Band drum kit. I have a picture of it and its modifications on my cell phone.

I'm getting married Feb 28th, and believe me, I'll have video and pictures of all my wedding presents serial numbers. I just registered my bike with the National Bike Registry and I'm sending in the bike lock insurance form even.

What about Boomerangit? Does this sound like a good idea or should I just get out my Dremel and engrave some numbers on stuff? And do I want to engrave in "secret" locations that a thief won't spot (or a pawn shop owner)? Or do I want it obvious so thieves don't even steal it in the first place (because they know a pawn shop won't buy marked goods)?

Oh, I just remembered that I still have receipts for all the big item stuff, but sadly none of them mention serial number info at all... (lame)

Re: Apartment robbed, computer stolen, excuse to build a new one!

Oh, and I think I am going to go with an Intel Core 2 Duo solution since they're so overclockable and cheap! I can buy a E7200 for $115 on Pricewatch and it should get up to 3.2 GHz.

If I got the AMD chip for $100 I'd only be able to get it up to around 2.6 GHz and when I needed to replace it in the future, I'd have to hope there was a better/cheap AMD solution around. By going with Intel, I know I can always just drop in a nice Q6600, or better, in the future. Sound like a good idea?

If you spend money with AMD they can afford to work on making better chips

Re: Apartment robbed, computer stolen, excuse to build a new one!

Well, two things have changed since I last posted. I finally decided the E7200 was the chip for me, and one of the people who robbed my apartment was caught and is going to trial next week. I'm supposed to get "restitution" but I'm not holding my breath.

My next question is what motherboard should I get? I really want an eSATA connector, onboard surround sound and optical SPDIF. I don't know if it's worth it to spend extra money to get PCI Express 2.0 or a board that will support DDR2/3. I want to be able to use this computer for as long as possible so I assume that I do...?

Newegg.com - ASUS P5K DELUXE/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Been using an older version (P5B Deluxe Wifi) for almost 2 years with a E6700 and Vista Ult 64bit and have no desires to change anything about it.

I game with it and also use it has a HD Home Theater PC for my bedroom.

Living room has a Asus P5B-E with E6400 Vista Ult 32bit and it is a dedicated HD Home Theater PC for my 52" Mitshi DLP. It handles all I throw at it with nary a bobble.

I would suggest a nVidia nForce based board myself... Not a fan of ASUS these days...

I have an EVGA nForce 730i board and I love it.

If he had gone AMD CPU I'd agree for the most part. But out of the 100+ comps I keep running the ones with nvidia chipsets and intel cpu's are problem children it seems.

If MS and Nvidia would get thier pissing match settle about co-processors and sys bus drivers it might help also. The first tuesday of the month I cringe waiting to hear what MS screwed with a 'critical' patch that is nothing more than a driver they prefer. Black Tuesday, love it.

What are you talking about, the EVGA nForce boards are solid, not once have I had a problem with hardware or drivers.

Don't think I mentioned EVGA boards anywhere in my reply, I'm sure they are good boards.

Re: Apartment robbed, computer stolen, excuse to build a new one!

Well Im an AMD fan... so I would go wit... doh... AMD.

Not wanting to trash talk Intel nor anything, I've never felt the need to O/C a processor nor I have the money to buy another if I mess it up. I normally avoid those paths.

With this said, though, I'd like to know if any of you intel lovers would help me with something....

I havent seen any reviews lately... its been a long while since I stopped going sites or buying magazines to compare cpus and other stuff. Anyways, I'm confused with the latest Core whatevers.

For example, when I read about AMD (Its so simple to me).. x2 (2 cores) x3 (3 cores) x4 (4 cores woot) (insert applause).

Ok, Core 2, Core 2 Duo.... explain pls Its messing with my mind... and Core 2 Quad.... I see Core 2 and I'm thinking of 2 cores, but then Core 2 Duo... what the? I would guess that Core 2 Quad would be 4 cores... but then.... whats Core 2 Duo?

Thanks in advance...

For my clients... I go with whatever is more accesible for them, budget wise. I recently got an AMD64 2.4ghz for one low budget type customer... and I'm liking the performance so far, besides, its for internet and to write stuff, not CPU intensive tasks.

If my suppliers gets me an Intel Core 2 (with mobo and memory) cheaper than AMD I do consider it, and if my client is an intel lover even more. But for the most part, I throw AMD because I love it.

Re: Apartment robbed, computer stolen, excuse to build a new one!

Core 2 is the name of the chip.

Duo = 2
Quad = 4.

*insert applause* lol

You don't need all that fancy smancy unless you are hitting some major number crunching apps. I have a Core 2 Duo 2.4 and it hauls m
